Transcribing

I've finally seen the light on the need to transcribe. My playing has been stagnant for a while so I made a start on something last night. I've begun working on Blue Lester, for it's simplicity there are some really nice lines in there!

I was wondering if you feel the need to write out the part or is learning it by ear enough? How do you go about it? Do you skip the head or learn that by ear or by sheet?

I skip the head most of the times and I try to learn to part by ear. it's much harder for to memorize something from paper then memorizing it right away.
