First off I want to thank Phil (Phil1) for selecting me to host this month. I will try to be very active in commenting and submitting my own recordings in order to keep it a lively thread.

There have been some issues with threads not being very active and people not posting (for various reasons). For this month, I am going to try to get as many people involved as possible. As a result, for this month we will be featuring not one but FOUR different songs! Also, you’ll notice that they all feature the same composer- John Coltrane!

I’ve picked these tunes to give everyone a chance to jump in. We have a Trane Changes tune, a modal tune, a ballad, and a blues. I hope that everyone can find a song or songs they feel comfortable recording and posting. If you only feel comfortable with one, just post one! Want to play on all of them? Go for it! If you want to use your own backing tracks/live recordings, do that! I think there’s something here for everyone, so jump on in.

One thing I’m a big fan of is taking a song and changing the key/tempo/style/etc. So if you want to take one of these tunes and play it in a hip-hop/country and western/anything you want style, go for it!

Here is the list for this month:

Giant Steps
Impressions
Central Park West
Blue Train

Here is a link to the dropbox with lead sheets (C, Bb, and Eb), backing tracks (various tempos/styles), and more audio recordings. (there are 2 pages so if you don't find something on the first, go to the second!)

https://app.box.com/s/7ufsvgk2xznyja08t39f06qh4303ugy0

Here are some of Coltrane’s album recordings on YouTube, but if you do a quick search you will find MANY different recordings of these tunes.

Giant Steps- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30FTr6G53VU
Impressions- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UU-999dO9Cw
Central Park West- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rz3Q1efswzU
Blue Train- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1GrP6thz-k

I know the Central Park West backing track isn’t too great, but there’s nothing else good that I found. If anyone has a better one, please post it up!

I always try to be upfront with my own playing so that people don’t think I’m just some guy sitting behind a computer critiquing others but doesn’t actually know how to play. As a result, I will try to post a lot of my own recordings this month to contribute as much as I can to this thread, so to start it off here are a few of me on these tunes!

Giant Steps (studio)- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtTzhWkscDw

Giant Steps (live)- https://app.box.com/s/5d4bkejs9wzsl27ftct8ew8wxs9ygip8

Giant Steps (keyboard)- https://app.box.com/s/6zbvg8fmv7a5tb5pkmiorvbtlwy7hvti

Central Park West (with backing track)- https://app.box.com/s/wtlzmc4nph8gdzzkxrb32ryjf6ugnwrf
(I was going to use my own iRealPro backing track because I really don’t like this one, but I figured I posted this one so I used it)

Impressions (with backing track)- https://app.box.com/s/a288w7ogysd9e2o24andtpzii0lfk5pq

Blue Train (with backing track)- https://app.box.com/s/q1zuhndq8ok47b4fnk25hpv8aoxhcr9o

I hope we make this a great month, and I’m looking forward to listening to everyone’s recordings!

Heres a older version of Blue Train I done a few years back . Gets me on the ladder here, lol. Not had any will or time to play what so ever in nearly 8 months apart from gigs so heres a chance to get me involved again, I hope, haha. Will for sure try and do some up to date recordings this month . Very clever pick from the monster player Mr Pollack. Theres stuff for everybody indeed.

@Phil1,,, sounding very Trane in tones... Nice energy in Impressions, keeping good pace and time, great job. Central Park again has that Trane sound in sound tones. Phrasing also. Lovely stuff.

Thank you Borganiboy. Your "Blue Train" has some very nice tonalities all over the horn. I know you have strayed from Borgani and come back ( I think ). Anyway that combination of Jeanette's mouthpieces and that horn certainly brings out some rich tones. I believe Trane would have loved all of the boutique mouthpieces out now and the the seemingly effortless way you can cover the entire range of the horn.

Thanks now. I've had two of Jens pieces now. Both long gone but were big blowers. Both were her New York models. Ì always hear them big intervals and spikey notes in my head. I hear little melodys in there and try to bring them out. More of a lyrical player i guess. Not sute which horn I had then, maybe my Andy Sheppard Autograph tenor I think. Had a bunch of Borganis, 5 I remember, lol. Still in my top tenors, there amazing. Also had an other Italian beast, a Rampone Cazzani R1 Jazz, lovely tenor. My Lupifaro platinum I have now is freaky nice. Love it to bits. As you see I have a thing for Italian horns, there just different and I like it

I really like the idea! My level isn't quite high enough to post a Giant Steps take. It's a tune I've tried to learn for many years and just can't get my brain around. But impressions and blue train I very likely will take a crack at.

Interesting. Do you still have the Z's? And if so have you gone back to Borgani exclusively?
No I keep going from Z to Borgani and back then back again, lol. Also had 4 Z's, crazy I know. Scares me at times. I now only have my Lupifaro tenor, also play a lupifaro soprano. For me the lupifaro is a perfect mix of both the borg and Z. Since I got it I've never even looked or thought of changing which is great for me. All these tenors though I do love. I've had 5 MKVI tenors and also 1 MKVI alto and my last MKVI was well over 12 years ago. Modern horns float my boat now. Good thing is I been cured on my gas. Theres been many many many morn horns but i'm happy at last, lol

Ok I see the Lupifaro in your signature. Not familiar with the brand.

Don't feel bad about all the horns. I was talking to a friend yesterday who changes horns faster than I change reeds. I would see him one week with the holy grail Mark VI and the next week it would be gone and replaced with a Reference 36 or mint Super 20. And that's just tenors. Not to mention altos, baris and sopranos. I'm talking literally not figuratively. He may go through 20-30 tenors in a year, and I'm being conservative because that's just the ones I would know about.

Back on topic, I'll try to get a "Blue Train" and a "Giant Steps" take soon. Will definitely get another "Impressions" and another "Central Park West" take up. I've got some ideas for those two.

Hah. Nice to hear your old sound. IMO you have the same great sound on all your MP,s and horns. I think it's good to rec those ambient tracks but I miss your old sax sound.

Great idea, Dave. I did this a while ago when I still had my Tonamax. Maybe I'll do it again on my Navarro BBS & compare the sounds. Going back to this version, it sounds a bit out of tune so I might be able to do another one with better intonation. The back-up track is from Aebersold: Andy Laverne's
"Countdown to Giant Steps" which I think is a great version. Giant Steps is on hold.
I also like the Trane changes to "Body & Soul" which I heard him play at the Half Note.
