Hey-O! I caught Jared online NYE and he must have been impaired, because he let me pick the TOTM for January! :D

I'm an uber-fan of Clifford Jordan, and I love all things in 3, so this made a lot of sense. I've included a couple of links to versions (but the list is by no means exhaustive). This is a transcription, so feel free to point me in the direction of corrections. Backing is a BIAB backing with the following deets:

4 choruses, 16 bar intro, 24 bar outro (same progression as intro set up for a fade ending)

Here is a link to the backing/charts.

And here are two versions from Clifford himself. The first is from the Strata-East date In The World. When Charles Tolliver and Stanley Cowell were kicking off the musician-owned label, they didn't have much material to work with. Clifford had a bunch of stuff "in the can" including this recording. Album is absolutely worth owning.

Vienna from In The World

The second version is from the direct-to-disc (all the audiophile rage in the late 70s) recording Hello, Hank Jones! Again, a record totally worth having in your collection.

Vienna from Hello, Hank Jones! (link is to the full album, but the tune is the first song)

Here's a take to prove Dirk wrong. 😂😂 Basically just running changes, but it's a starting point.

My Yani goes to the doctor tomorrow, so I'm hoping it's outpatient surgery (leaking like a sieve), so this is with the Mark VI. The Theo Wanne mouthpiece just doesn't get the sound/response I want on this horn, so it's the RPC .125B, which is to say, I'm gasping. Vienna

Alex Nyman - Extremely listenable, sir! Makes me wish I had a better backing for this. :D I always appreciate the precision of attack of the individual notes in your playing. That sounds goofy, so I hope you understand what I'm failing to describe. It's clean, no slop in the attack.

guidocreo - Don't sound off track to me! One thing I find myself doing with tunes by Jordan (and Cedar Walton, for that matter) is sort of mapping out what scales will work over sections of the tune. By looking to a more modal approach, it tends to simplify the songs for me. This tune is one I've known most of my life, so it was a bit different, but, for example, Walton's Bolivia gave me fits for years. I finally sat down and walked slowly through the scales that would fit each chord, and damned if it isn't basically a 2-chord song. I mean, I still can't play it at tempo, but I've at least turned down the gain on the suck feed. #smallVictories
What I really appreciate about this take is the way you stayed in the pocket of that subdued feel. One of the things I've grown to appreciate about these threads is the varied versions, even using the same backing. Really does give insight into the way each individual player hears the tune.

Gave this one a try today, not even postable. I'm going to have some work to do on my 3/4 timing when its not slow waltz speed. I can count it, I can feel the groove, but Then the solo section comes and my counting, toe tapping are completely erased by my fingers jumping away and a cacophony of random notes! I believe i'll start with some listening exercises, maybe some light transcription. Thanks for the challenge :D

I wish I could offer a constructive approach, but three has always been a natural feel for me. I struggle like hell with 4/4. Always have. Everybody has their thing. To quote the great bassist Buster Williams, "Practice isn't supposed to be fun."

Today I learned this song exists. 🤣 Listen to the ride and the piano comping in the first version OP linked when they’re playing 1 feel versus 3, and carry that feel of playing only the big beats. Quarter=160 in 3/4…makes it a 53.3bpm ballad in 4 with a triplet feel. One chord per “measure” and on the second half of the tune each chord lasts 2 beats. The melody already implies 2/3 with the way it’s phrased.

It's a security feature. The browser is preventing links which directly download a file. There is an option (albeit hidden in the error and must be expanded) to allow the download to proceed. Each browser will differ though, and some force you to alter this setting in the entire browser. That said, if that sounds annoying, I can send a drive link after I upload it.

Sure :)

I certainly realized it works in 4 as well. I looked at it and did all this Mental preparation for playing it that way. But I lose all the applied logic when the solo hits and my brain switches over. It's a disconnect of something seldom practiced for me so shed and listening are still the answer :)

It has nothing to do with modification. I have the same error. Something non secure with your sharing platform. Both Edge and Chrome not allow download.

Eeesh. I know my site is not https designed, but that's the price of being a hack html programmer from way back. Not sure what to do about it. I didn't get the error when I used the Tiny Url link.

I mean, it's not your website. It's just a new security feature to prevent a common malicious attack vector where a false link is sent to automatically download self-executing malicious files. Your site seems pretty good though, just an outdated sharing method, as the common methodology now is to view with an option to download.

So, if I'm reading you correctly, if I were to put that data on a simple page with links, that would fix the issue?
