I am happy to have been asked to select the TOTM for September 2017: thanks Mark. :)

I've chosen "You don't know what love is", a popular song written by Don Raye (lyrics) and Gene de Paul (music) for the Abbott and Costello picture Keep 'Em Flying (1941), in which it was sung by Carol Bruce. The number was deleted prior to release.

Musical analysis at this link:

Scores, MP3 Backing , BIAB file are avaliable at this link:

Numerous recordings of “You don't know what love is" in various styles at various tempos can be readily found on Youtube. I have selected some videos, among wich some italians, in this playing list:

I wish you a lot of fun with this nice tune, looking forward to many posts.

During the weekend I will take a new recording of myself.

Ciao.

I did record this tune exactly four years ago for another forum and used it to compare some of my Otto Link mouthpieces:

1. - 'You Don't Know What Love Is' (1974 Otto Link STM Early Babbitt 8* - La Voz medium - fast):
https://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=12461532

2. - 'You Don't Know What Love Is' (1950's Otto Link STM Florida no USA 10* - La Voz medium):
https://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=12440175

3. - 'You Don't Know What Love Is' (modern Otto Link STM NY 11 - La Voz medium):
https://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=12440176

The EB 8* was for 20 years my main mouthpiece, the FL 10* for the last 7 years.

Hope to do a new version later this month.

I like them but the first one is my preferred, perhaps because we never forgets the first love.

This is not a tune straight out of Tin Pan Alley. ( those rented rooms that had a piano) it's a guy who is contemplating suicide, disillusioned with his life, and sitting at the piano writing his suicide note. Anyway I hope he didn't end it all, but I'm pleased he had those emotions and decided to write this song. I think it's tailored for Francis Albert and for his album, ONLY THE LONELY. But all this is speculation as I didn't bother to google any details about the song. Chet catches the spirit of the song and perhaps he was singing it in his head when he jumped from that window in Amsterdam.
Anyway i am working on posting a ver. And hopefully I can do it justice.

Guido, nice and enjoyable take. I really liked your lower register and sub tones in this recording, but I think your upper register needs some work in voicing and volume (sounds like your biting).
Yes, I think so, I need to hard work on less biting and more larynx opening.
Thanks for your appreciation. :bluewink:

Thanks Nick, well done :bluewink:.
I have appreciate very much the interpretative tension and your intonation and clean sound, as usual.

Hearing your tune I have stimulated myself and I think that I'll record this tune on bari next weekend.

Ciao,
Guido
Thanks Guido.
I've enjoyed your Tenor takes and am looking to your take on baritone.
If I find time I will have a go at it on tenor.
