Nice to be back, sorry I've been away so long.

"The Night Has a Thousand Eyes" is a song written by Benjamin Weisman, Dorothy Wayne, and Marilyn Garrett. There have been some memorable versions of this, John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins both recorded magnificent takes. The Sonny Rollins version with Jim Hall is one of my favorite recordings by anyone. I was surprised it hasn't been called before. Also, it's a tune you could take a lot of different approaches with in terms of arrangement. You can find it in the original Real Book, although that's the more Coltrane influenced changes with the pedal point harmony.

There are Jamey Aebersold Play Alongs in Volume 52 and Volume 75. There's also a few backing tracks on YouTube as well. Should be in iRealBook and Band in a Box too. I've done a bossa style backing in BIAB for practicing myself.

Here's a backing track from YouTube.

Sean, very nice job on the tenor take (I didn't check out the other one). Can hear the love for the fantastic Rollins/Pass version you posted (one I also have for many years in my collection and like a lot) in how you played the theme. The solo was build up very well, not overdoing stuff and with a nice and consistent tenor sound over the full take (even at 4:45 :bluewink:).

Here's quick take short before everybody wants to sleep in the house. I don't like too much songs/tracks with a constant switch between straight and swing 8th (at least not in the impro part, where it stops the flow imo) and didn't quite know what to do with the latin parts. I missed the last chorus, but hey - I know a new standard now and played some tenor in the basement so this was a good evening ...

Just did some quick and dirty recording for multiple current months TOTM threads.

Fist backing I tried was the chaos one Taragot also used above. Like him I had some issues recognizing what happened in the in my ears overly busy rhythm section egotrip, so it become a one take only mess mostly played by ear! Here it is anyhow:

- 'The Night Has A Thousand Eyes' (Florida no USA 10* - Rico Royal 2) - Latin:

Also recorded two takes with a more straight ahead Swing feel backing, one on the Florida 10* and one on a Berg Larsen 150/2. Will probably post them a bit later this month if the thread needs some filling up, because we don't have much action here currently.

Yes, this special backing track is a bit like rodeo riding - trying not to fall down takes all the man. But nevertheless, your version has a very nice boppin' feeling - I really like it!

OT: I listened in your playlist to your Version of "Sweet Emma" - an song I always liked a lot and always thought that this could be a great (B&I)-TOTM, but never found a backing track (I don't have BIAB). Did you make it for yourself or did you find it anywhere?

Thanks for the comments Taragot. :)

I didn't know 'Sweet Emma' until it recently came along at the UK sax forum as Song of the Month. Forum member rhysonsax (he is also active here on SOTW) hosted that thread and did create the backing. You can find all information in >this< thread.

Great call Shawn - I was getting into the Desmond version at the beginning of the month.
I recorded a BIAB midi take just for practice, with plans to do one with a proper backing later.
Well that plan fell apart - I just couldn't seem to get anything going today.
There's something about the backing tracks that don't agree with me. Very frustrating.

So here's the (ugh) practice take ...

Thanks Taragot - I think this is a "quit while I'm behind" tune .. maybe try again in a year or two.
I kept missing my targets in the lame "St Thomas in a different key" solo attempt ! :bluewink:

Yours and Shawn's and Peter's were solid takes. I've listened to each a couple of times. :)

@Taragot - Can you hear you did listen very well to the great Sonny Rollins take and used some of his ticks in your take. The take sounded a bit nervous to me, probably because you didn't feel at ease with the backing and played a lot in the higher register (giving the take a kind of alto feel).

@Brendan - Very smooth and nice baritone tone and I like how you played the theme and improvisation too. Some very runs, which proved to me that you at least studied the chords and scales involved in this tune (which is more than I can say about myself with my pre-practise take!). Good take.

@Dave Pollack - Dave, another killing take. Must be heaven to be able to play like that. :)

@tenorcat - Always nice to hear your unique submissions. Lots of Rollins in this playing, nice natural reverb too in that room. You have a strong attack on the first note of each phrase, was that due to a slightly hard reed?
