Hi guys, it's my honor to host again this month, and just like last year when I hosted I chose another Gerry Mulligan tune. Maybe next time I'll go with another artist, but this song has been a favorite of mine for a good while now and I thought you would all have fun with it.

Here's a link to the PDF files and the backing track: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/dqk3nh6at426upc/AAA2K-O6MQOpnGZ8Ep3PxYlya?dl=0

Here are a few versions to give you some ideas:

Mulligan and Chet Baker: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aTsO5IpMUg

Icefire 4tet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U60vDrlywDI

A different Mulligan recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSfQuIN7GWo

I'll post a rendition soon, but, feel free to get started! I look forward to hearing what you do with it.

Here's the usual day one, practice style recording :

More thread filler than anything else ... I'll probably delete it after a few days.
Not much use in listening past the head - I'm still feeling my way around and couldn't come up with much listenable, improv wise.
I'll keep working on it and probably post another with the hal leonard backing later in the month.

This is a Mr PeeBee style alto take. Yeah, alto... again. It's back from being on loan and this is the new to me Philtone Solstice. Still a little brighter in the upper register than I'd like but I can work on that.

Festive Minor on Alto.

This is a bit of a struggle for me as the backing track doesn't count off and the syncopation feels odd due to lack of familiarity. Also, forgot to jump to the coda so this is truly a "Warts and All" recording.

I’ll upload the version with count-in sorry, didn’t consider the issue with syncopation

Edit - added another track that has the count-in, sorry about that

No big deal. It's good practice and I did lock on pretty quickly at the top of the tone. Just didn't feel solid at the top.

Good stuff so far John and Brendan, very much appreciate your participation and look forward to further versions if you intend to record some other ones =)

I apologize for my lack of recording yet, I've been having PC issues so not able to record... I hope to have that back by the end of this week though!

I'm off spending the week at the Webster University Jazz camp. So I won't have time to do this anytime soon if at all.

I'm glad I managed to get the alto take in.

This tune is a new one to me .... since I don't play bari I thought I'd go for something totally different and see how this tune sounds on soprano. The melody turns out to sit really well in the soprano's range IMHO. Nice pick buddy lee!

Good stuff man, some very modern sounding stuff going on and nice use of double time. You have a good ear, for sure.

Thanks for the compliments on the track everyone . Not much time to listen until I get home from Jazz camp.

Alto is a work in progress... Phil Engleman of Phil-Tone makes great mouthpieces and the Borgani alto is awesome as well. All limitations lie solely on the player behind the horn. I’m happy with that being the case :)

Fantastic ! I love how you expanded the feel of the melody into the solo. :)

Again a great choice, buddy lee! I like the imitation from the piano.
Here's again a soprano take, now from an amateur .... Had no time to prepare, so I missed the reentry of the head.
I used new gear to record - a small yamaha mixer with on board reverb and the double soprano clip on mic from sd system. I'm not shure if I like the sound of both for recording - but it's so simple to use...

I like the tone here on soprano, and the gear you're using to record definitely does the job. Thanks for playing!

Here’s the link to a wee thing I did this morning at the breakfast bar with my iPad and Shure digital mic it’s got the kitchen reverb thing going on a bit and it was a first take hairy warts and all so be gentle. Please. Sorry for the absence from the forum for the last few months but life has been hectic. Enjoying the takes very much from the other players on here and like a few others this is a tune I was unfamiliar with but shall make it a part of my set list in future. Thanks for listening if you have the patience. Alex
