A magic "find that small screw that bounced off he bench and disappeared" tool. As well as more screw drivers.

So what I'm hearing is: screwdrivers, ball peen hammer, rawhide mallet, round nose and needle nose pliers, a couple screwdrivers, snips, burnishing tools, razor knife/blade, a good small screwdriver, pad slick, spring tool, small screwdriver, micro butane torch... oh, and a really good set of small screwdrivers!

Thanks that helps me fill some gaps in my tools selection!

1 set of screwdrivers, we'll consider that one tool.
2 pad prick
3 pad slick
4 spring hook
5 pearl protector
6 torch
7 leak light
8 feeler guage
9 tenon expander
10 tenon shrinker

With these tools I can do most sax play condition work that comes into the shop.

I use a dental lab micromotor unit with burs, diamond wheels, polishers etc far more than I use ball peen hammer, or round nose pliers (actually never!), burnishers (almost never) or snips (almost never).

And I often use various polycarbonate punches and rawhide hammer, pad slicks, various spring pliers, parallel jaw pliers, file-like sandpapering tool, snap-off-blade knife, and not so small screw drivers.

Asking for the top 10 tools of saxophone repair technicians is sort of like asking an auto mechanic the top ten tools to rebuild a car (including the engine, transmission, suspension, brakes, cooling system, conditioning, electrical, body work, painting, ...).

I think it might be more realistic to make lists like "Top 20 tools for padding work", "Top 30 tools for dent work", "Top 10 tools for spring removal, prep, insertion, adjustment", "Top 10 tools for soft soldering", "Top 10 tools for silver soldering", etc.

I realize this is a hugely open ended question! I just wanted to get a feel for the most used tools in the shop so I can start building my collection. I don't have the $$ right now to build an entire collection so I needed somewhere to start. I'm sure I will expand as the need arises in various areas.

Thanks for all the input!

If money is an issue, allow me to introduce you to the "ghetto student tech" repairer.

Working hours include 5 minutes before performance - 15 minutes after you're supposed to have started playing, and are performed in a safe clean working environment (the pub).

tools of the trade are...
blu tack, rubber bands, erasers and paper.

This is tricky. I can think of more than a few really cheap tools that I use all the time and are important like a sharp knife/razor, small plastic/brass brush, etc. Almost anyone can easily get those things. I can also think about pretty expensive tools that I would include as some of my most important, but you could get many cheaper tools for the same cost. I would definitely say both my micromotor and my nail scissors are very important to me. So it is not so simple since you might include a $2,000 tool and a $2 in the list of most important tools.

I use pad slicks/irons, sanding sticks, swedging pliers, small vice with anvil, fine needle files, craft knifes, meths burner, gas torch for soldering, dent tools and a lathe.

(plus a heap of screwdrivers. )
