Any saxophonists with pierced tongues? I can't wait for Christmas to come and try playing with mine in...

It's already done... My tongue is mostly healed. I still gargle with listerine from time to time... I can whistle reasonably well with the piercing in. I figure so long as I get shorter barbells for it, I can manage it...

I would imagine that you could just take the barbell out when you are playing and put it back in afterwards. But who knows, maybe you can get some cool slap-tongue (hammer-tongue?) type effects with it in...

This has already been talked about. Most thought it was a bad idea(including me), but if you want to it's your body.
It HAS been talked about, but only by people with no experience with the subject. Maybe I missed a post or two, but I haven't seen anyone say that his playing has been hurt by a piercing.

So, can anyone answer the OP's question - has anyone tried to play the sax with a pierced tongue? And is it possible for people who haven't to refrain from sharing their ignorance?

I remember when all we had to worry about was the amount of hair on our heads, and piercing an ear or two <sigh>..

Why not do real body mods, like flippers to make you swim better, or wings to make you fly?

I think the body mods done today are useless...

and maybe detrimental to day to day functioning.

So I'm confused. You're a sax player. You went ahead and got your tongue pierced before asking anyone if it has caused any problems for them? And you just had it done and now you can't play until Christmas?

My friend the cellist deeply regrets having had his fingers pierced. . . . :D

I haven't had a sax to play for a couple years now. Well more than that actually... And I'll be getting a new sax either around Christmas or around my birthday which is in early march...

I always wanted to get my tongue pierced. And I have plans to pierce other parts of my body, but I was just wondering if anyone else had actually done it, which I guess nobody really has. If I really think about the way I move my tongue, especially when playing sax (which is like second nature to me as I would always tongue the notes against my teeth to practice when I couldn't practice on the sax), I can't foresee any problems... Well, I guess by the time Early Spring comes around, I can tell you guys what it's like, maybe open up a few possibilities for those of you who do want to pierce their own tongue.

I guess I'm the pioneer here...

I guess piercing one's body is better than slitting one's wrists.

I had friend and fellow sax major in college with a tongue piercing, she still played fine.

Of course she had many piercings. Only bad experience was one day in quartet practice, she came in and sat down and immediately jumped up to exclaim something along the lines of 'Oh! New Piercing!' Needless to say we didn't have much of a practice for the laughing.

Pierced tongue...

Thought I'd give my input...

I've had my tongue pierced since '94. I play just fine. Slap tonguing is pretty tough- it's hard to really seal-off the air with a whole in your tongue.

I think anyone serious about playing a saxophone would be an idiot to have this done. That being said... I was a MAJOR idiot back in those days. Do as I say, not as I do...

Have fun, kids.

Well, Sax is more of a hobby for me anyway. Glad to see some people who have already done it and that I'm not the first. My Piercing is more in the middle of the tongue anyway. Thanks for the input.
