There's an old Detroit Symphony album called "French Favorites." It's got all of the warhorses, but on Bolero, a very young Don Sinta (I believe this was in the mid-60's) is playing tenor. I'll back Nitrosax up on this one. He sounds absolutely beautiful (of course, it is Sinta).
There's a really good old Detroit Symphony recording of "Pictures" with Larry Teal playing the Old Castle. I'm pretty sure that it's one of only a handful of recordings that he did. Absolutely fantastic.

Saxman is right...I think I got mine off iTunes--I had to dig thru about 3, 450, 876 different versions of Bolero to find it but...When I heard Sinta on tenor, I nearly passed out...He sounds great on alto as well-- don:t get me wrong-- but I:ve NEVER heard a tenor like that...it was more beautiful than a cello...
Its a shame he didn:t do more with the instrument...
I found this on iTunes, but it appears that you have to purchase the entire album. Is this one track worth the $10? I imagine that it is, but would like some verification.
Thanks,
JR

I can't believe nobodies said the name "Nobuya Sugawa"

After listening to him play Cyber-Bird Concerto I am convinced he's the best.

Nine bucks new on Amazon. I got mine used for quite a bit less some years ago.

Thanks, Angel, I just grabbed a used copy for $5.40 plus shipping--sometimes iTunes makes me forget about buying the actual CD!

I agree that it was Teal and Couf (soprano and tenor respectively) on the old Mercury label recording of Paray/Detroit doing Ravel Bolero. I've seen the LP many times on eBay and in record stores, but the CD re-release is sadly out of print. There's a CD at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Library in Oakland if anyone local cares to check it out.

Russell Mallare plays a good soprano saxo solo on this Bolero recording with Sinta on tenor (Jarvi/Detroit on Chandos). Mallare was also the soprano player in the Detroit Saxophone Quartet when Lynn Klock was the bari player.

Sugawa

I agree with BlueLight. Sugawa is amazing! I listened to his recording of the Dahl Concerto, as well as Tim McAllister, J. Eric Wilson, John Harle, and others while working on the beast of a solo and I was shocked at the altissimo range and elegance of Sugawa.

What McAllister recording features the Dahl? Or, is it just the 3rd movment from his website?
