In an effort to stop my tinnitus from getting any worse while I practice, I wear blue tooth headphones for playing along with online lessons or jamming with music. While it accomplishes reducing the volume of my baritone sax, it also prevents me from accurately hearing my intonation clearly. Does anyone use a simple, inexpensive setup where I can play into a mic and be able to hear both what I play and am playing along with while controlling the volume?

I started playing with a Morgan classical mouthpiece. It helps me reduce the volume. I am wary of headphones, as I find it hard to judge the decibel level of what I am hearing. I have a decibel meter, and that has helped me become more aware of volume. Then playing outside, or in a bigger room helps lower the decibel levels. I use a larger speaker, and boost the bass frequencies of the play alongs. This allows me to play quite softly and still hear the chord changes and rhythm.

I have tried many things, but even long periods without playing have never impacted my tinnitus, which, I am afraid, may be irreversible and not diminishable. It has been the same for years and years now.

In fact earplugs make the hissing relatively louder to me while muffling the playing. Which makes me wonder.

If it is there to stay, what is there to be gained from a further reduction of the external loud noise once the damage has happened?

It probably is irreversible but I assume it can get worse if I don’t take precautions. It’s annoying but tolerable at this point but if it gets louder it’ll be a lot tougher to deal with.

To try to help not getting worst,i had custom s ear plug made by an audiologist!
Not sure if i ll ever get use to play with those..
Like Milandro said,,i don t think that this situation will ever go away..
But if i do go back to play with certain bands or projects,,i will wear them.
All the best
