Wow, I agree - that’s a great album! I got that as a Christmas present when I was in high school, probably about 1976. I played those 3 records over and over. During that timeframe as a teenager, I had very little money to buy records, and really appreciated having that one. Even after building my collection a bit after I started working, that album is one I listened to often.

‘The Saxophone’ was the first jazz album I ever owned. Prior to receiving that album, I read lots of library books about jazz saxophone players. Knew lots of biological facts about them, but still hadn’t actually heard their music. There was no jazz radio where I lived, my parents listened to other genres of music, and I had little money to spend. It was magical to me when I first played that album, and got to hear giants like Coleman Hawkins, Phil Woods, Sonny Rollins, etc, for the first time. I’m going to have to dig that out and listen to again now!

BTW, I bought a CD version many years later of the Coleman Hawkins album that had him, Phil Woods, Charlie Rouse and Benny Carter playing Body and Soul. The vinyl version sounds much better to me than the CD. I don’t know if they messed up something remastering it or what, but it’s quite a difference in audio quality.

Yeah they probably messed up the sound by using too much noise reduction software.

I had that when it first came out and I played it constantly. Haven't seen a copy in decades, thanks for posting.
Likewise. The liner notes, by Robert Palmer IIRC, are great. I loved the way he drew connections between live/adventurous Bird and Sonny Simmons and Prince Lasha and between Ben Webster and Archie Shepp among others.

It's a compilation mostly of Impulse material so it's not comprehensive but still great. They did a similar set for bass and drums. I had the former at one time but not the latter.

[Edit] Forgot about this one which was along the same lines: Energy Essentials 3-LP set
