Hey i just had a question about the new legal real books that Hal Leonard published. I play alto sax and i just wanted to know what is the difference is between The Real Book Vol 1(Sixth Edition), The Real Book Vol 2 (Second Edition), and finally The Real Book Vol 3 (Second Edition. I'm also confused on which one i should get, so feel free to put your opinion with it as well. Thanx

The books published by HL are nice - I have vol. 1 in Eb and Bb. The chosen keys are standard for the most part and the updated engraving is legible.

Each volume of the Real Book has different songs in it. You can probably find a list of the contents for each somewhere online. It is difficult to advise you of which one to purchase, because each contains tunes that are "need to know" in nature and others that you'll probably never play. I'd say that all are beneficial and good resources to have on hand, so why not just start with #1 and proceed numerically?
