The Powerful Phil-Tone Rift Tenor Saxophone Mouthpiece Review

Today I am reviewing the Phil-Tone Rift tenor saxophone mouthpiece made by Phil Engleman at Phil-Tone mouthpieces. The Phil-Tone Rift tenor saxophone mouthpiece is a great mouthpiece for those of you who value power without sacrificing thickness and depth of tone. Many tenor sax mouthpieces that are built for power lose some richness of tone, thickness and a fat full sound especially in the upper register and altissimo range of the saxophone. The husky and thick sound of the Rift tenor mouthpiece would make it a great choice for Rock n’ Roll, funk, pop and I think even jazz music once you learn to control the unbridled power of the Rift. Check out my full review and sound clips and decided for yourself……..

Hi Steve! Great review. I enjoyed it a lot and you sound on it was great! I love the Rift for alto, actually own one, and remember you liked it quite a bit. How does the tenor one measure against that one? What is your opinion?

It's hard to compare an alto mouthpiece with a tenor mouthpiece. I do think they are similar in that they both can give a lot of power while still having a fat thick tone. I remember that is what I loved about the Rift alto mouthpiece. It was bright and powerful but had a nice fatness to the tone I loved. The tenor Rift is similar in that it gives you a brightness and power but retains a nice thick tone.

Thanks for the response! I am certainly thinking about getting the tenor one, pair it up with my alto Rift. Thanks for your insight, your reviews are always great.

Steve, what would you consider the reeds you used to be like? Are they similiar to Rigotti gold which you had used for a while?
Oh man this is tempting, because I absolutely love my Alto Rift. I think I need to not read Steve's review in order to keep my wallet closed.

Yeah, I think they are similar. Maybe not as bright but close. I honestly haven't play tested them back to back with other reeds so I don't have a good sense yet on how they compare to Rigotti Gold, Roberto's, BSS, etc....... Rigotti is definitely the brightest and BSS the darkest. I'm not sure where the SYOS reeds fit in there. Maybe I need to do another reed comparison review.........

Indeed, based on my experience the SYOS Arcane are very high quality reeds, a bit darker than the Rigotti Gold. A very good reed to try IMO.
There is a Rift passaround in EU currently. It is presently in Germany for those who aspire to write great reviews like Steve.

It is DONE! It will be in the morning mail.

I hope you like loud. I should have named the piece "Eleven" as in "The volume turned up to 11"

I’m very tempted. Still love my Tribute LTD. But I do need (a lot) loud(er) a lot of times. I’ve recently been trying a Durga 5. It’s super loud, but I’m not really in love with my tone on it. It doesn’t sound as “agressive” as I’d like when I push it, just loud and almost harsh. Looking forward to read more reviews!
