I've noticed that the letter "M" on the shanks of metal Bergs differ in position.
Was this intentionally done? Does the difference in the positioning of the "M" mean anything at all?

Btw...I'm new to Bergs...do forgive me if this question sounds rudimentary...

Generally, The facing designation, either M or SMS, position is an indication of age and value. Stacked in line with the tip and chamber info indicates a newer mouthpiece, approx 1970's forward, and has less value. "Offset" to the side indicates an older and more valuable piece.

If the M or SMS is in perfect line with the size (100/1, etc) then it is a modern Berg (the most recent of which are not all that bad, btw). The older bergs have what is referred to as the "offset" M or SMS. Recently (over the past 2 years I've noticed) these have shot up in value almost doubling what they were in 2 years (if you look through Ebay). However, in reality (what I have seen actually sell around here) I've seen these stay at more of a 50% increase in value, even less in some cases.

The offset does not necessarily make it a great player though but other distinguishing marks can determine it's market value (circulare milling marks vs denim, duck bill vs scoop, etc...). Theo's site has some info that may help too. http://www.theowanne.com/mouthpieces101/BergLarsen.php

I've seen the offset M in the 80's too. Not so sure when they lined it up. It may have even been in the 90's for all I've been able to tell.

For the offset Ms, they also have different positions.
Some are more to the side, others are slightly to the side.
Does that mean anything?
