This publication ("The Note") from the Al Cohn Memorial Jazz Collection at East Stroudsburg University is a great resource. The new issue was waiting for me in the mailbox when I got home today and it's great! Several great pictures of Phil Woods(quite a few that I hadn't seen before), Phil's usual "Phil in the Gap" column discussing his tour of Japan post-tsunami and his remembrances of Joe Morello, and an 18 page (!) interview of Phil. And it's listed as Part 1, so I'm hoping for another 18 pages next time!

YEA- I got it today...it sent me into me QUILL AND PHIL vinyl....As I was doing it. I realized what Woods said about the lack of gigs, that he and Quill never got. The ***** never changed? If THAT band couldn't get a gig where's the justice? Also Jeff I loved what Phil said about being a mortal- via Bird. But then also the comment that Bird cut the cherry pie with a switch blade! hahaha.....Subtle but funny as anything Grucho said ever.

Also, The picture of the _sax section_with Danny Bank and a young Brooklynized Eddie Daniels. haha!! And Zoot with a MK6 .:tsk::yikes!:

The REALITY is Woods is a survivor. We know that. The world was a different place in the "era" he speaks, and also as I call it " pre-Real Book" or " Jazz Before Aebersold". The part that is hard to understand is that bands like Phil and Quill never went past the Lincoln Tunnel as he put it. As great as they sounded, as fantastic as the rhythm section was. The other part of the article, I can't wait for! Part 2 can't be here fast enough....also interesting about that record on Muse. The comment Phil made, though he said that to me before about " Hearing something else". Also the flute stuff, that I read before but still was honest and very interesting to revisit.
