I saw his trio many times during the 90s and early 00s before he noticeably slowed.
His music has been and will continue to be a part of the soundtrack of my life.

RIP...

I'll have to pull out his Infinity album today -- sort of appropriate, I suppose. (Although "pull out" doesn't really apply to accessing a digital database; the CD itself is somewhere in the basement.) Also love, in addition to his Coltrane years, his work on Brecker's Tales From the Hudson.

McCoy Tyner dead at 81

McCoy Tyner, an influence on jazz pianists since his days with Coltrane, passed away this morning.

Re: McCoy Tyner dead at 81

Yes I read about it a few hours ago. It's very sad. He was one of the real giants of jazz piano beginning in 1960 up unil now. 60 years of playing some of the greatest jazz piano ever. Long may his name and music shine on. I know it will.

I saw and heard him for the first time in 1961 with Trane at the Vanguard. I was only 17. That was a mind expanding experience and I suppose that as much as I loved his playing what blew my young mind was Trane and Elvin both playing stuff I had never imagined possible. From then on McCoy has been a force in Jazz at the very top of pianistic brilliance and I feel grateful for having been able to hear him play both live a couple of times more and on all his many albums with so many great musicians. A true master who will live on forever in the pantheon of Piano Masters of all genres.
