That is very saddening... Huge loss to music for all... I'll have to open up the great books I have from him today - a great resource and instructor...

Not to mention, it' is a great time to watch some Eastwood films featuring many of his works

RIP, Lennie. I had the pleasure of seeing him perform as the alto soloist with Stan Kenton's band in the late 50's in Birdland.
He was a hell of a player and took very long solos full of great ideas & an aggressive approach. His movie music speaks for itself .
I'm sorry he had to leave. Here's a Kenton recording with Lennie in full bloom:

In this time I hate to have to ask (I know I could probably just google it) - was it just old age or a Covid thing?

Just now seeing this. Stumbled across an LP of his back in the early ‘90s - a sextet or octet record IIRC something like that - and bought it purely because I liked the cover art and thought “Lennie Niehaus” was a wonderfully improbable jazz artist name. Never heard of him before that. Thereafter I ended up buying everything I ran across with his name on it!

Trying to learn improvisation skills (at 71!), I ran across a book of jazz etudes with an included CD with rhythm track on one side and a saxophonist in the other, so you can gradually phase him out with the balance control! Before it even came in the mail, I read that the author, Mr. Niehaus had passed away about ten days prior. Perhaps the tiniest piece of him will live on in me, and the two young saxophone players (16, 19) in our Junior College jazz ensemble to whom I mentioned it. One already has it.

Also, even being very much a Clint Eastwood fan, I was very surprised that I was totally unaware of his interests and skills in jazz, as we had just watched a movie with him playing piano in a bar. I was amazed that was actually him! Then I read that Lennie Niehaus was a good friend and collaborator! Guess there's a lot I don't know!!!
