I know it all depends on condition, etc. But a late Top Hat and Cane tenor in good playing condition, cosmetically so so... what would be a price range? I am pretty sure the one I am looking at is original lacquer.

Thanks,

Steve

These are really all over the map with dealers trying for some crazy money up to 4500 or so for really nice ones. On eBay a horn like you are describing is likely to do something from 1600 to 2500. Hope that helps.

Thanks Saintsday.

There is one being advertised locally, for 1800. It's not really close to my home (about a 50 minute ride)....so I wanted a little more info before I burned the gas to go and take a look. I have heard what monster players these are particularly in tenor. I have played a TH&C alto, but never a tenor. I might go take a look this weekend.

Do the later ones blow/sound all that different than the earlier ones? Anything specifically I should look for in this horn?

Thanks,

Steve

Steve, you've been around here enough to know to look for the snaps, Nortons, silver 400 logo and tone ring if you have an eye for resale, but it is still worth mentioning for any newbies reading this.

I don't have enough personal experience with TH&C tenors to comment about the difference between the early ones and later ones, but FWIW (probably not much when you can actually play the horn before buying) the conventional wisdom favors serials below about 350xxx. I'd probably be willing to drive 50 miles to check it out. Good luck. Maybe you'll fall in love:D
