Hey Everyone,
New website is www.neffmusic.com
I just got a piece back from Ed Zentera and decided to put a recording on there. I'm always trying different pieces so I figured I'd see if this might help any of you out there who are like me. I have 8 tenor piece right now and am trying to decide what I want to keep and what I will sell. I'm not looking for any feedback on my playing at all. I'm just playing what ever I feel at the moment. This is in no way suppose to be a studio type recording just me goofing around. I am interested in what you guys might think of the sound or tone of the piece. This is just a hobby for me so as I have time I'll post more recordings. I hope this will help some of you out there(although it might hurt those of you with GAS:D ) Let me know how the website works. thanks, steve

Ok, I posted a new mp3. It's with a Guardala MB II new production from WWBW. Let me know what you think. Can you hear a difference between it and the Barone or No? I have a question also for you audio experts out there. Right now I'm about a foot away from the mic. Would you get more of the characteristics of the mouthpiece where I am or should I back up and record from across the room. I just figured doing it close would be better. Thanks, Steve

Allright, I just put a new one up. Freddie Gregory mark II 7*. This is a great piece. Plays beautifully. They're expensive and I'm not sure if they are worth the extra cost but the guy does indeed know what he's doing. Let me know what you think. I'm kind of busy the next couple days so I don't think I can post another one until Friday. Thanks for listening. Steve

Well, Years ago I did something similar to this but I played the same thing on every take (My One and Only Love) and I tried to get funky on the bridge so people could here's that side of it. maybe I should do something similar again so people can hear the piece in the same styles. Hmmm....

Ok. I posted a new clip. This one is of a Theo Wanne refaced 7* NY Metal link I bought on ebay ayear or two ago. One of my favorite pieces. I've tried to sell it a couple times with no luck and actually did sell it to a student of mine but after playing it for 6 months it just wasn't happening for him so I traded him a Lamberson L7 for it (which he sounds much better on). I've decided to set a few ground rules for myself. I will only record after I've been playing on the piece for at least a half hour. I did that with the Barone and I did it today with the Link but I didn't do it with the Freddie Gregory and the Guardala. I just played them cold because I didn't have time to warm up. I think many people heard this as me not being as at home on the piece so to avoid that I'm going to warm up first. Also, I've decided to myself to always take the first cut. this is just for me because if I start stopping and rerecording I start going crazy and it's never good enough and I'll end up in an institution. So......whether good or bad you get the first cut and I'm not going to worry about it past that. Let me know what you think. :) Steve

Thanks Guys. I am planning on redoing the pieces I already did playing the same "My One and Only Love" I'll try to keep it similar. I was playing to what the piece led me to. the Barone felt like I should play different than the Guardala. I'll try to put up a few tomorrow. Ving it's interesting that you say that about the Barone. That was my big complaint with it when I got it. It was too bright and I couldn't push it. It got to about 70% and would just stop on me. Everytime I sent it to Ed it got better and better. Also the reed size makes a huge difference also.

And I just put up the Barone again on "My One and Only" so you can compare it to the other tracks. I only have 3 pieces left to play:
Guardala MB II again on My One and Only"
Lamberson 7DD
RPC 115B

These are my brighter pieces. I don't typically like the brighter sound but it is often called for on the gigs I've been doing so these are my pieces I use for those situations. Talk to you later. Steve

You have to go to the podcast archive to see the new posts. I am having fun with this. It's very interesting getting people's opinions about a sound or tone. I already have a good idea of what I like but I like hearing what you guys think of each one. Last time I did this years ago the HR JVW link won over all the other pieces I played. Second place was a Barone jazz model I had back then. This has nothing to do with which ones I sell or keep but it is good for me to hear the recordings and decide what I like. Steve

Thanks guys. You would think that I could just listen to the cut and I would know which one I like the best and that would be it. the problem is I like different aspects of each sound. I'm making some decisions by the end of this thing thats for sure. It's time for me to spend more time playing and less time shopping.;)

I'm using the same reed on every piece. It's a Java 3. the barone isn't as powerful and free blowing as the others. I was standing in the exact same location trying to play the same. That being said I think I might be on to something with the Barone. i need to experiment some. I put a little bit of poster putty in the bottom of the chamber and it really help the projection. I think the chamber might be too large for me. I'm going experiment with reducing it alittle aat a time and see where that goes. I was very encouraged by the poster putty trick.
