Allo guys,
Lamberson player,I have an offer on a trade for a Lamberson J6 for a Selmer neck, and I am use to play a Ponzol IIVI S 110 tenor mpc! So I am worried that a J6 will be or could be a little too closed! A J 7 would have been perfect cause I do play on a 7 occacsionally on a JJ,So my question is will I regret in the sence that it will be too close since I mostly play that 110!
Never owned a Lamberson, but always wanted to play one,,specialy the darkest one ,,well the J model!
So I would apreciate opinions specialy from players that own a Lamberson!
Thanks
All the best,

Hi Saxobari,

I have a Lamberson L6 and a Ponzol 110 (refaced to 105 my MOJO). I had to search for reeds to find one a quarter of a strength harder. I used the reed comparison chart from the WWBW catalog and found a reed that works. Having said that I pull out an old box of V16 reeds that I use on my Ponzol and found a couple that we a bit harder and worked perfectly on the Lamberson. The Lamberson has killer response and feel. Good Luck

How would compare the Lamberson to the Ponzol,,is the Lamberson a better mpc,and is the Lamberson as responsive,I always wanted to play a Lamberson,,,but is there a huge opening difference or barely,,you do have the same Ponzol that I have! From your point iof you do you prefer the Lamberson??
Thanks Saxobari

Well I have had my Lamberson L6 in my mouthpiece box on and off for a year using it once in a while. A friend of mine is showing interest in buying it so I thought that I would give it a try tonight on a gig. I used a new Vandoren V16 reed and from the moment I started playing I could not put it down long enough to put the Ponzol on. The Ponzol is brighter but since MOJO perfected it, it plays as easily as the Lamberson. The Lamberson L6 is modeled after a metal link and for the style of jazz I play, I believe that I will make it my number one mouthpiece again.

You can't ask someone else what's a better or worse mouthpiece, not when you are comparing two well made pieces. It's how it works for you and you have to try it yourself. The L6 and L7 do not play the same as the J series though so its not a great comparison. I was playing metal Links and didn't like the L6 or 7, but I really dig the J's.

I have a Lamberson J6 and J7. I'm playing the J6 because my chops get tired playing the 7. I think the 7 is a bit more open sound and I like the high end more but they really are both good and i'm probably better off with the 6 for now.
I can tell you that previously I played an STM Link 7 and a New York Link 7*. The opening on the J7 is the same as a Link 8 and indeed the J7 is harder for me. So my guess is that the J7 might be right for you if you are used to a 110.

I really like both of them. They are dark withou being stuffy, my intonation is better than it was on the Link and I think the 7 especially has a nice full upper register. They are good mouthpieces, but your mileage may differ.

Michael, I have talked to Fred about making a 105 or altering mine. He said its easier to open a 6 than close a 7. Did you compare a J6 with your J 105? Was there much difference? I am tempted to have him either open my 6 or just buy a custom one. Don't want to XXXXup the piece I'm using though.

For what its worth Fred told me that after 10 minutes he makes them both sound the same just by finding the right reed and getting used to them.

Lenny I had Fred open me a 6L but it didn't play right for me. I have owned 6L and 7L but no J's. I prefer the piece to be custom made rather than altered. I'm probably in a very small minority that doesn't like refacing. I'm not saying it doesn't work obviously it does for the majority just not for me in my experience and I've had several pieces done by some of the major names here in the US and here.
I like my Morgan 6M alto but I can't play any Morgan tenor pieces because they're too open or close. I can play them because they're great pieces same as Fred's standard facings but I don't feel comfortable.
I played a 120 Berg on baritone for years and years but I couldn't get comfortable on any other 120 piece then I had the Berg measured and it was 110. Since then all my bari pieces have been 110 and I'm always comfortable.
I like my 7DD Lamberson bari a lot.
I think for me it's about matching my preferred reed strength which is a 21/2 or 3 on everything. cheers
