Here is a clip of 'The Hague's Blues' as played in 1979 in The Netherlands at the North Sea Jazz Festival during a tenor-battle with Budd Johnson, Dexter Gordon, Illinois Jacquet, Arnett Cobb and Buddy Tate. Unfortunately Arnett Cobb (walking with crutches at that time) was not able to make it back to the stage to contribute to this 'encore' track.

It's not the best track of this tenor battle, but still nice to see those old hero's in action. I liked the altissimo thing of Budd Johnson at 4:50 and the high 'A' of Illinois Jacquet at 6:25 the best (he has the best high 'A' on tenor ever IMO ).

Big contrast in demeanor between Jacquet and Dexter. Dexter patiently waits for Budd to finish his last phrase, Jacquet cuts Dexter off. Jacquet wanted to structure a big finish, but that looked a little rough to me.

Yeah Mr. sideC, fully agree with your observations (as usual ). A pity (IMO) that they only played a few solo chorusses per person in this 'encore'. It could have been much better with nicely build up solo's and much more solo chorusses. They had time enough, it was the last concert of Sunday the 15th of July in the 'PWA zaal' (see >this< NSJ 1979 time schedule overview'. I guess they were tired!

Indeed Dex, that was the first live tenor battle I encountered in my life at age 17. Took about six years before I bought my first tenor, but this concert has always been a big inspiration for me .

For sure he was, I also love Budd's playing. Have seen him about four or five times life here in The Netherlands in several Texas Tenor settings (with Jacquet and Cobb) and also once with Jimmy Witherspoon and good old Jay McShan. I still must have some old tapes with music of that great concert somewhere.

Dex, LOL. Anybody catch the Franky and Johnny quote right at the beginning of his solo then "Stranger in Paradise" a little later? He just can't resist.
