Syeeda's Song Flute - Archie Shepp


One of my fav' Shepp records....and how about the cover!!

Shepp a long time Coltrane family person is really setting the pace here. Enjoy :)

You probably know this, but the cover picture is taken during a playback during the session. Coltrane came in from Long Island at some ungodly hour of the morning after being wakened from bed, and reputedly was still in his slippers when he came down to hear this.

Still it's nice to hear :)

Some great playing on that date- and also the kinda playing that this ERA needs more of.

The picture is really interestingly posed...Coltrane towers above, like a giant shadow, too big for the frame even (having to bend down to fit in) and Shepp sits at the bottom of a staircase, looking like he has just been handed the saxophone...a comment on the master/student relationship?...
