14. Are you kidding? Why post a question like this on a saxophone forum?
15. Yes. I do discover artists I hadn't known from time to time.
16. If this refers to something like "Billboard", no, otherwise I don't understand the question.

Piracy
Has piracy made music listening easier?
Not for me because I don't listen to pirated music.

Do you download legally or illegally?
Legally only.

Do you buy cd’s mp3 or vinyl’s?
CDs. Sometimes vinyl, very occasionally mp3s.

Has piracy made seeing gigs more appealing?
No

Listening Style
How and how often do you listen to music?
Daily. Internet radio and my own Cds. Also in the car.

How much is just listening to music?
Uh, how much of my daily listening to music would be music? 100% I would think.

Is there a preference to how you listen to your music?
Do you listen to albums or songs?
Individual cuts on the radio and mp3 files, complete albums on the CDs.

Technology
How has technology affected how you listen to music?
Internet radio gives a lot of convenient listening options. Aside from my stereo, I listen mainly from my computer, then my auto, and occasionally from my mp3 player. This technology is wonderful. I can listen on the internet to Japanese and Hawaiian music as well as other western styled and world musics. That would've been impossible years ago. I'm listening to FM Castle from Fukuchiyama right now. I'm in heaven.

Have you ever listened to a vinyl record?
Yes

Has the ease of technology meant you listen to more/more diverse music styles?
Somewhat. When I was a kid, there was a cornucopia of styles to listen to at my local record stores and you could hear before you buy. When most stores available to me quit allowing customers to preview recordings, and also as prices got higher which prohibited the chance-buy taking I used to do, it limited what I would buy. I was more inclined to go for the tried and true sure thing. Now, however, with all the indie products, with the ability to preview at least a smidgen of each tune on albums, and also with programs like Starbuck's weekly free download, I've listened to more styles now than I have since I was a teen with the neighborhood record store available.

Do you own a mp3 or 4 player?
Yes

Musical Influence
Is your music style affected by what your parents listened to?
Yes, in the sense that they gave me a relatively broad based foundation and also one of quality in music. My listening then went on to be much broader than theirs, but it's built on the foundation they gave me.

Is music important to you?
Very. It's the breath of life - that and humour.

Are reading articles and youtube playlists affecting what bands you listen to?
Yes and No. I read about musical groups and individuals in a number of musical periodicals, but I don't follow any bands in particular in the sense that I think you mean it here.

Are the charts your biggest influence?
No influence. On the chance occasion that I see a chart, it helps me know what others are listening to and what bands/individuals I might want to give a listen to.

Piracy
Has piracy made music listening easier?

The internet has made it possible to listen to just about any song at any time. So listening is easier. Is uploading songs to YouTube piracy? I don't know.

Do you download legally or illegally?

I usually buy the regular mp3 music I buy. I do download and deconstruct midi's that I find on the internet in order to do my own arrangements. But usually, I will already own some version of those tunes that give me permission to perform them. Sometimes I will arrange a piece of music and then go buy and download an available version just so I'm not stealing from the author by not paying royalties. Again, is it technically legal to do that? I'm not sure. But I hope I'm doing the right thing.

Do you buy cd’s mp3 or vinyl’s?

I buy my daughter about twenty CD's for Christmas every year. I consider CD's the "gift format". As for my own music, I always download it. Vinyls are antiques.

Has piracy made seeing gigs more appealing?

Yes, if you mean going to see bands play live. My daughter is continuously getting music (probably pirated) from her friends that comes from completely unknown artists. This is the only way this music gets around and it definitely builds interest in those artists. Often the first time fans of these bands actually buy their music is when they go see them live.

Listening Style
How and how often do you listen to music?

At work, in the car, while working out.

How much is just listening to music?

None. I'm always doing something else.

Is there a preference to how you listen to your music?

Yes, I like to listen to different artists playing the same general kind of music. I make compilations like that.

Do you listen to albums or songs?

Songs. There are very few albums that I like every song on.

Technology
How has technology affected how you listen to music?

I used to have to listen to albums. Now I can pick individual songs. And can also go onto the internet and find lists of music that fit specific moods and sounds.

Have you ever listened to a vinyl record?

Yes. They always sounded a whole lot better than the 8-track tapes in my big wooden console home stereo. And how old are you?

Has the ease of technology meant you listen to more/more diverse music styles?

Yes. It was almost impossible to find a lot of the less popular genres of music in the stores before the internet. You would have to order a little-known album and then wait a month or more to get it.

Do you own a mp3 or 4 player?

I think every piece of electronics I own will play mp3's. I been meaning to program some on my microwave oven but I lost the instructions booklet.

Musical Influence
Is your music style affected by what your parents listened to?

Yes. I heavily dislike listening to Hank Williams Senior, Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty. And I probably always will.

Is music important to you?

Yes. It ranks third behind faith and family.

Are reading articles and youtube playlists affecting what bands you listen to?

Yes. There is so much music, it really helps to make use of guides and playlist to find music that I might like.

Are the charts your biggest influence?

What charts? I thought Top-40 was long gone a buried. I am more likely not to listen to something if someone says it's popular or if it is doing well on some music industry chart. The internet is really killing all of that. And I am very happy about it.
