Nice playing, both laid back and fiery. My preferred is Four, where your sound is a bit more edgy. Your choruses build very nicely. Congratulations.

Very fine playing. Good tone, good note choices, everything is on order. Why is that I feel something is lacking? Maybe it's just that there is nothing extraordinary about it? Can't say that I feel you "own” any of these pieces. Don't get me wrong, I wish I had your facility, but there is nothing compelling about any of this. Anyone in your group write music? Might help if these were not standards so that it is at least a new sound. Does the world need or crave yet another rendition of any of these if they are nothing special?

This criticism may seem harsh, but it seems that you are looking at making a recording for release, so I think the above reflects some realism about that. Hopefully you can find something that sets you and your group apart stylistically or via new music.

I f**'n hate the new myspace... it's not practical. I'm the only one? I could't even listen your records. Sorry
Since Myspace's demise as the social networking platform of choice they have dramatically cut back system resources to the point where unless you are as popular as Jay Z the audio player barely has enough bandwidth to play a single song at all.
They may as well just unplug their entire system.

Soundcloud, however, is mavellous.

Nice playing! :)

Hi Wade,
First off thanks for listening. I really appreciate it. Your advice is extremely valuable. Just like any other artist, I'm still searching and working on my concept.
Thanks.

The old one was so simple, and most important, it used to get the 'job' done. I miss that.

Backing to thread,
You've a great medium low and low tone on your horn. The high register sounds a little bad and sometimes out of tune imo. It can be listen when you play longer tones on the recording. I've liked your improvisation. Also agree that you should record your own tunes. :bluewink:

Tim - I listened to Beatrice, Bessies Blues, and Four. Really enjoyed your playing. Great saxophone sound. I found your playing generally melodic and expressive. A lot of great bop patterns in there. I'd be very happy to play at the level of musicianship as you are on those, for sure.

As far as some of the other observations (mostly Wade's comments), I can appreciate the constructive criticism that was shared. And I'd say Wade and I come from pretty divergent directions about standards and mainstream jazz. In general, the music seemed a little on the safe or restrained side. With the selection of music, I was probably looking for a little more fireworks. Obviously, this is a matter of personal taste, and you might have wanted a more polished and refined sound.

A lot of exciting moments in Bessies Blues, felt like that could have been a great take, seemed like you "backed off" in a few places. Maybe taking some of the great motifs and developing those more fully before moving on to the next thing would have made for a more interesting ride...

On Four, you opened up a little more and took a little more risks which I liked. Very solid. I probably liked Beatrice the best, that is such a lovely tune. Still seemed like you could have pushed the envelope a little more...

The thing about standards, even jazz standards, is everyone plays and knows that material. If you want to really set yourself apart, you might want to come at these from a fresh direction. Otherwise, I'd do some original material. Even something as simple as taking an existing tune and coming up with your own melody. I love standards, but to make a name for yourself playing standard repetoire in the typical way...unless your Joe Lovano or someone like that, it might not be the easiest way to go.
