Hey everyone,

I am a sophomore college sax major and I am planning a recital for the fall semester and I was just wondering what some people's suggestions for standard rep are. I have played the richard lane suite, creston sonata, lunde sonata, and glazunov concerto. I am currently starting on the heiden sonata and moving onto the ibert and scaramouche next semester. I am looking, however, for more standard rep to purchase and learn over this summer. Whats a good list of rep for me to start purchasing?

Thanks!

Here are some other standards in our rep. Listed in no particular order:

Sonata - Muczynski
Prelude Cadence et Finale - Desenclos
Scaramouche - Milhaud
Fantasia - Villa Lobos (Soprano)
Sonate - Decruck
Tableaux de Provence - Maurice

I suggest maybe looking into Muczynski first - such a fun piece to play!

Find the Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Organ by Denis Bedard. Great music, and it's not overplayed like so many other classical saxophone works.

While it may be a lovely piece (I've never heard it), I doubt many saxophonists would consider it to be a "standard." As for works being "overplayed," - standards tend to get performed and recorded more often then other works. I would imagine this is how they become "standard" repertoire.
