When I respond to those "What was your first concert?" questions, my usual response is that my parents took me to see Stan Getz play at a local college when I was about 10 years old. It was as the bossa nova period was just getting started, but Stan was touring without a vocalist. Today, quite by chance I happened upon a picture of the band that I saw! It made quite an impression on me, since I still remember the personnel to this day: Roy Haynes, Steve Swallow, Gary Burton and Stan.

However, my Dad took to the Jazz Showcase in Chicago to see Dexter.

Cool. I’m struck when I see pictures like this just how young everyone looks. I guess it’s a sign of my own aging, being aware of these icons for such a long time it just always seemed they were much older. ( Same with news anchors and politicians when I find out I’m older then they are…)

Seen any cops or firemen lately? Some look like kids right out of college. Seems they were all "old" when I was in grade school. Heh.

I remember Gary Burton seemed to be a lot younger than the rest of the band to me, and I was only 10!

Wow! I would have loved to see Dexter Gordon live. He’s one of my favorite musicians of any genre. I have the movie Round Midnight and have watched it over and over.
