ok im a freshman in hgh school, im currently in marching band. some people in the band are also in jazz band( little back story). i used to think my section leader was goood, senior probablly played since 4th grade, would look at the evil 16th note patterens and conquer. but when i saw him online i was scared of how amazing he was, could go up with any one here with. so i was wondering how i can practice to get better. not amazing just better. all i have is marching music and pep toons, at least give me warm up excerises. I just dont like the giant gag with me and my peers it really is starting to get at me. ANY TIPS every thing is accepted.

again i dont want a quick pass to kenny g really what i want is what you guys used to work on to get o the next level. ( i have half a semester till concert band auditions so songs choice appreciated too.

If you're going to really start practicing, get yourself a metronome. And really use it. Practicing with a metronome, to get real benefit, also takes some practice.

You crazy kids these days with your ePhones and oPads, there's a ton of good metronome apps available for cheap or free.

The Universal Method and Selected Studies are excellent suggestions.
Just remember that you are a freshman and the section leader is a senior. He has 3 extra years of playing time under his fingers.
Get the books, hit the shed, and give it time. You'll eventually get there. :)

When I saw that you had responded to this thread, I was expecting to find a recommendation to hire a teacher!

Normally I would, but times are tough and not everyone can afford a teacher.
For now the books are a good start.

When I saw you had replied to this thread I thought you were going to give the kid grief about grammar, punctuation, spelling and syntax. :) :) :)

I didn't quite understand what you were trying to say in that last post....

The Universal Method is an intimidating book. BUT... It goes from 'Ok, this is pretty easy' to 'I WANT MY MOMMY'.
Everything you need to kick some serious behind your Senior year is in there.
Start slow and it's not quite so bad. Lots of worn out reeds and patience will get you where you want to go. :)
