The Blue Whale (downtown Los Angeles). Very small and intimate. Great jazz
The Catalina Bar and Grill on Sunset Bl. Great jazz. Big name talent. Larger, but still intimate.

My two favorite venues.

Down here in San Diego there is the (usually) monthly Jazz Live concerts put on by KSDS 88.3 public radio at City College. (Just saw an awesome show last month, Luther Hughes and the “Cannoball-Coltrane Project”)

Dizzy’s has show most Fridays and Saturdays, a small intimate concert space. Not usually big names, but some great shows nevertheless.

There are weekly jazz jams at a couple of venues. Monday night at Rosie O’Grady’s for example is a good one.

Best source of info generally is https://www.jazz88.org/jazzcalendar/

We should have a listing of So Cal shows here.
Though with 2 toddlers I can't go to many... Kids! Cramp my style!

Am I right to think Catalina's just isn't what it used to be? And I'm not talking location. There calendar doesn't appear to be filled with the jazz talent that it used to.

I am gonna go see Nate Smith and his Kinfolk band at the Blue Whale this Sat.
Saw them a year ago and Nate Smith, Jaleel Shaw on alto, Jon Cowherd on keys, et al just killed.

Having Listings is the reason I started the thread.....lots of Sax activity but where???
https://www.anaheimpackingdistrict.com/calendar was a post I made few days back on another thread.

“Concerts in the park” a SolCal summer tradition. Various weeknights, multiple locations usually close to home. Great place for family music/picnic outing and largely the reason for having them. Kids will be home and in bed by 9:15 or earlier. I’ve been going on Wednesday’s for 26 years with kids and dogs. Search “regional park concerts” location services needs to be on.
Discovered Amanda Castro at one few weeks back.

Maybe the Catalina Bar & Grill could sponsor a SOTW players night to support us. Good way to find talented players.

Members please list events that support/promote saxophone players. Yea I said that.

Thanks to those who have already posted and thanks in advance to those who will.

DatSaxMan appearing at the Covina Swing Band Festival 5:45 August 11.

Woot.

Come hear the smokin sounds of 3WheelDrive as we light things up on the last day of the Festival. No, we are not your typical Swing Band. With ELEVEN bands over four evenings, there will be plenty of that. A small town event in the middle of the megalopolis that is LALALAND.

Our second appearance at this fine event. So they already know better.
But we are back again.

Do introduce yourself if you come by.

No, my next-door neighbors. Kyle the sax player is the head band instrument technician Sam Ash Hollywood. USMC Multi instrument player. Abe on guitar and keys is a fabulously talented musician as well. Grandson of Fred Steiner the score writer for Star Trek and a multitude of movie scores.
Brothers Hunter and Nicholas head the band up with lead guitar and percussion. Poets and songwriters with great artistic ability. Adam on bass, Lizzy’s great vocals, Johnny’s smooth trumpet. You get unbelievably professional band playing small humble venues. Something that’s rare these days.
Me, I’m a token roadie lol.
