Hello everyone -

There have been a few threads advertising upcoming saxophone events in the past (Bay Area Concerts comes to mind), and I thought a good post would be for saxophone concerts in the Southeast (Florida, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Texas, etc.). Folks such as Dannel or Angel should let everyone know about upcoming saxophone concerts in this part of the country. I'll get us started...

On Tuesday, October 23, Dr. Lawrence Gwozdz will be giving a recital at the University of Southen Mississippi SOM in Marsh Auditorium at 7:30pm (this is in Hattiesburg). Included on the program will be the Dankner Sonata. Admission is of course free.

Also, on Monday November 13, the Rascher Saxophone Quartet will be here at Southern Miss for a concert at 7:30 (also in Marsh Auditorium). Included on that program will be the vonKoch "Miniatures" and Rosenblum's "Mobius Loop."

Let's keep concert posts coming!!!

Ouch... we definitely need to collectively do a better job of this sort of thing. If I'd had more notice, I would have loved to come down for this.

February 19th, 2008 Patrick Meighan will be playing the Bolcolm Concert Suite with the FSU Wind Orchestra. It will be in Opperman Music Hall.

I think it's the 19th. I'll post an update when it comes closer to this time! I wanted to go to the rascher concert, but I'll be getting back from NY at that time and won't have enough time to drive back :(

P.S. Good Idea Dave ;)

Wednesday November 7, 2007. Tenor saxophonist Stephen Pollock will give a recital and masterclass at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Recital is 12 noon in Hulsey Center Recital Hall (rm 108). Music of Sherwood Shaffer, Tom Massella, Mark Taggart (with Angel!), Dana Wilson, and Astor Piazzolla.

Masterclass is 7:30pm in the choral rehearsal room (308). Music of Paule Maurice, Eugene Bozza, and Heitor Villa-Lobos.

Steve is really playing great. Will be a blast, hope to see some of you there.

Angel - is the Taggart piece you're doing with Steve Pollack "Lake Glenwood Ripples" for the Trio Bel Canto? If so, I wish I could make it out there (noon is an odd time for a recital).
Yep, that's the one. I recall that you and I were both in Louisville for the premiere. It's a great new piece that fits perfectly into Steve's lyrical repertoire. He's basically touring with it in order to include the local professor in the recital program. Doing the same thing with Amy Griffiths at Columbus (GA) State prior to his appearance at UAB.

Noon on Wednesdays happens to be our convocation hour, where I know we'll fill the hall with music students. This was a short-notice engagement (they didn't give me the UAB job until August), so it was way too late in the game to book a campus venue for that evening.

Next one will be more timely, I promise.

Angel - If it weren't at noon... I have a class I can't miss at 5 on mondays, and there's no way I could make it there and back in time. I'll definitely be in Colombus, though! I'm also definitely going to make it up to greensboro for Stacy's recital! I really need to start going to things... ha

I'll jump in with a little shameless self-promotion.;)

For the Tallahassee area folks: Feb. 5 the Tallahassee Winds will be performing De Meij's Lord of the Rings at FSU's Opperman Music Hall. The "Gollum" movement features a sweet soprano sax part manned by big bossman, Vivace1.:D

That Gollum solo must be a challenge for you Seminoles who all sound dark, rich, and beautiful on your Buescher sopranos.

I hope you can play it nasty enough!!:tongue2:

Speaking of FSU...

The FSU Graduate Quartet (Dannel is their bari player) will be performing in Statesboro, GA Wednesday, Jan. 16th at 7:30pm. Not exactly sure where they'll be performing at yet, but we should know by Monday. If you're relatively close, they're worth hearing!
