Hi everybody,

I'm honored to pick this months TOTM as the torch as passed on from fsaxwas9 to me. the track of this month is Moanin by Bobby Timmons recorded by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKXsnDvILmI
its found in real book 2 (page 240) and several other fake/jazz etc. books..

you can download a midi backing below, I found this in a vast midi collection under jazz standards, and I've cut the lead and solo's out of it so it should be a useable backing, but other backings would be more then welcome.

I think this track has quite some potential for some of the talented SOTW'ers around here so I'm looking forward on hearing your versions.. I must add that I'm away for 6 days starting tomorrow so next weekend I hope I can enjoy many of your takes.

attached is a PDF with the sheet music from Real Book 2

Re: SOTW TOTM July 2013 - Maonin'

Maonin', a jazz tune composed by Charles Mingus
Great choice! But I think you mean "Moanin' ". "Maonin' " was by the Revolutionary Ensemble:bluewink2:...

Also the Moanin' that Art Blakey recorded (and that the midi backing corresponds to) is by Bobby Timmons, and is a different tune from the Mingus one. Both great tunes though!

Here's a youtube of the Mingus tune, which shouldn't be missed especially by bari players:

I'll give it a shot... don't have the chart/chords handy, there's a bunch of neat stuff in there that I totally missed just noodling. But fun tune... will do it properly later this month....

Hmmm, never heard of "Maonin'". Is that anything like "Moanin'".

Mingus' "Moanin'" and Blakey's "Moanin'", composed by pianist Bobby Timmons, are two completely different songs. The lead sheets and audio tracks posted so far are of the latter one.

Yeah, the Mingus' moanin is wicked. But I assumed from the stuff posted that we were talking about the one Blakey popularized.

Re: SOTW TOTM July 2013 - Maonin'

There's a whole whack of confusion going on. I think Koen has mixed up the composer of the tune he intended. There is a Mingus tune that is actually called "Moanin' Mambo" but is often just referred to as "Moanin'". That is not the tune that was given in the midi file so I would assume that's just where the error occurred. So Koen if you linked the correct midi File this Months Tune is Moanin' by the Jazz Messangers Comp. Bobby Timmons.

I'll do a version.

A good start might be to spell the name of the tune correctly!

I misread the wiki page about this song: Moanin' is ALSO a jazz tune composed by Charles Mingus. And if you look at the attached PDF it also says bobby timmons. So little wailer is correct. and I'm looking forward to your version!

apologies, you are correct. I was in a hurry for a performance this evening... and English will always be my second language..

both errors corrected now...

Gonna be some more good listening this time around!

This was one of the first hard bop records I got a hold of; I was like twelve or thirteen — wore the record out. I can probably whistle both Morgan's and Golson's solos pretty much from start to finish. And there's something iconic about those Timmons gospel-tinged block chords. I think it's not played as much as it might be if it hadn't become so popular and if it weren't so perfect. A little like "Ko Ko".

SactoPete, sounding awfully good — you've got the Rollins swagger thing going on here — bravo.

Haven't played this tune for a long time, but I've heard many great versions of it starting with the original Blakey recording. A night with blue note preserved is a favorite live version....

I also love the Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross cover complete with vocalese solos.

Very nice pick Koen :) (I actually expected 'Petite Fleur' from you :bluewink:).

I've corrected the title of the song in the first post of Koen and also added this TOTM to the main TOTM index:

thanks Peter,

yeah that was my initial thought but after looking at the score and listening to some versions I thought some people may get discouraged and after the succes of last month. And we all want to hear as much versions as possible!

and moanin has been in my fav. top 5 list for quite some time too (my top 5 consists of 5 number 1's ). And also looking forward on your take as well!

I took a hard bop swing at this today using the backing from YouTube. Recorded two takes, I missed the cue for the out chorus in the first take (maybe I should have actually played all the way through the track before I started record).

This second one linked below really captured the spirit I was going for better anyhow. Different reed this time (Witch Hunt was a orange box Rico, RJS today) same everything else.

Did today some quick takes with the backing provided by Arno (milachica) in post #5 (thanks for that :)).

Decided to record a (another ) tenor-mouthpiece-battle between a modern Berg Larsen 150/2 SMS and a 50's Otto Link Florida no USA 10*. Compiled one long track (sorry :|) with two chorussen solo on the Berg (starting at 1:03), two chorusses on the Florida (starting at 3:00) and starting at 4:56 some trading chorusses between Berg and Florida (first eight's, later four's). The theme is also played in eight's (Berg starts, Florida fills in). The Berg is a bit right in the mix and the Link left. Used the same La Voz medium reed and Selmer SBA tenor.

- Moanin' (Berg Larsen 150/2 SMS - Florida no USA 10* - La Voz medium): http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=12389243

Both mouthpieces sound quite simular. The Berg is a bit darker and less complex, the Link sounds a bit stronger on this reed and wins (this time) for me :).
