I am very happy to be able to contribute by hosting TOTM for September. My choice for September is Lullaby of Birdland. A great old tune that has been covered by many great vocalist as well as some horn players. Stan Getz did a version also a very cool version I found was done by Manhattan Jazz. What I like about this song it can be played very laid back or it can be a fast tempo still sounds great but ultimately play it the way you want.
The Eb and Bb will use the same lead sheet but I have provided different backing tracks for each. The backing tracks have a 120 and a 140 tempo. I am able to put it in any key or tempo if someone wishes just let me know. I put a walking bass into the tracks gives it a real live feel to it. I am looking forward to hearing the usual great recordings

Cool version and a really nice arrangement!

The bari player Roger Rosenberg toured Australia some years ago with Steely Dan. I remember Walter Becker introduced him by saying something like "this guy spent a long time playing with Buddy Rich, and after that experience he actually thinks that we, (Becker and ***an), are nice guys!"

That's a very good choice Dave. A classic tune and one that I haven't tried to play for years. I think even playing the head properly was a bit beyond me back then, so this month should be a really good challenge!

Bill
yes Bill a few parts of the melody timing can be tricky. The lead sheet for both eb and bb are in the key of D puts you in an easy range on sax. I can post a backing track with melody added exactly as the sheet is written if you think it might be helpful. That is how I learn all of my songs.. when I know it I mute the melody :)

Great choice. Very nice tune
I remembered that I recorded this about a year ago to test some mouthpieces.
Nothing special. Recorded directly in an iPhone. No mic. So the sound quality is bad.
Maybe I'll try to make a new one this month.

That's a very nice track JNB a really laid back feel and some very nice melodic improv. The 10M sounds great. Excellent despite the iPhone recording. It'd be cool to hear you through a decent recording set-up. Best, Alex

Thank you, Alex. Maybe if I get the chance I will try to do a better recording.

here is my first take at the 140 tempo. Playing melody is normally not a problem just wish I could get my improv stuff together.

Very nice, Dave. I really like your airy light tone that makes me feel happy and it is enjoyable to listen to. Also nice melodic ideas in your improvisation although your timing here needs some attention.

Great ! I was working on this standard on the guitar.

I felt like playing the tenor sax so I did it.

It's from Aebersold.

One with reverb : https://app.box.com/s/oiwbqscgxcel2lqno0pxm7w1k8eu7e65

The same without : https://app.box.com/s/ozr3oi6yzqdiz7o5899u1phr5rlpzd08
Lionelsax great work on both of them. Very nice flow to the sound and nice tight solo work too. enjoyed it. I like to play around with some reverb also find sometimes a compressor can be good to knock of the peaks and bring up the soft sounds. Easy to get carried away though and the subtle parts of the sound get lost.

Thanks very much, they were in fact the same take, about compressor I don't think I am a fan.
I feel ashamed for not commenting even if I listened to the takes.

Although the recording is not the best of the world, we can hear your sound and you feeling, I hope you will record another thing.

I think you will improve, have you ever thought about the Aebersold, it's in Eb, do you want it ?
The tempo is not a problem, you do it right.

Well, I like the thread because it's a standard I love playing.
I tried it only with a metronome and my solo is not so great.
This is my saxophone recorded by my Zoom Q2n !
