Morning!

It's the first of October here in Australia so I thought, why not post the October SOTW TOTW now!

It's a 3/4 Ballad by Miss Norah Jones, Come Away With Me

I have uploaded to the following Dropbox link a folder with the following bits and pieces.

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/9fdmnj89jvvlnzy/AADlNeZ0p4zbGaBqMYmp3gEqa?dl=0

Download the following from the above Dropbox folder:

1) Backing track

2) Original track

3) 12 x Phrases to download and play on loop in your media player. This will make it easy to learn the great phrasing Norah does in the piece. The phrases have been cut up to loop perfectly for quicker more affective learning. (Just think Suzuki method.) Also, as Dexter said, it's good to learn the words it makes playing the melody so much easier.

4) There are four pages of sheet music also in the dropbox folder, concert key only.

I feel this song is a Jazz Standard of this present era.

That's for sure an alternative pick WSR! :)

Would be nice if the first one who transposes the theme to a Bb or Eb version would forward it to WSR, so that he can add it to the dropbox link (saves others doing the same work and will probably attract also the people with limited time to post a take too). :).

Added this month tune to the main TOTM index and also glad to mention that we already have a volunteer host for November available too (Dave Wright)!

And just a reminder to all. Those great Jazz Standards we all love to play so much originated not as instrumentals but rather great vocal tunes just like Come Away With Me!

ps

I wish Miles was still around to do his take on this little number. Imagine!

Well, I think I've mentioned in another thread that presently we have our ATC Spring Carnival in full swing here in Oz.

I am doing a few this month each Saturday for 3 hours.

So I called this tune, "Come Away With Me" to be able to upload a fresh, live version for the October TOTM

ps

When we had finished playing it, my good friend and drummer buddy said to me, "that was a bit sad mate"

I replied, "Sad is OK"!

I think it's great to see a contemporary tune called, always liked her performance of it. And the Willie Nelson tune she covered back then too...

WSR:

Nice pick. She (Norah Jones) definitely does have beautiful phrasing. If you've had the opportunity to hear her live, you'll find out she is not a "studio only" talent :)

I'll give this a try in another week or so. I have some commitments which means I won't get to do much work on this until Sunday.

The album is really nice... There are 2 other tunes I think she phrases exceptionally well besides the title track.

Cold Cold Heart (I think this was originally done by Hank Williams) and the other is the jazz standard The Nearness of You.

Don't want to get too far away from the topic at hand.

Never been a Norah Jones fan so I didn't listen to her clips, however I did listen to you playing her song. You are becoming quite the player. Your rendition is so exceptional and your sound is ethereal. All the hard work playing outdoors is paying off.

The only downside to playing outdoors is that it wreaks havoc on your instruments. I played outdoors for decades. That's how you develop a great sound. You my friend are there, your sound on this tune is exquisite!

Thanks for an enjoyable pick, WSR! Here's a rough-and-perhaps-not-so-ready version:

https://app.box.com/s/zyn8h5533haowo311yj48mtllx85f5vp

Same setup as last month (Mk VI tenor, Broadus hard rubber mpc tweaked to about 0.1+ in.) except stronger (2.5) V16 reeds.
Hey P O S,

Very beautiful. I just sat out the front in the morning sun with a cup of tea listening to your legit take on Come Away. Love ya work dude. Great sound as I said before!

As usual no time at all to work on this for me unkown song. All I knew before hitting record was that it's in D for tenor, so here is a completely 'improvised by ear' take over the backing, without much structure and a bit wild!

- 'Come Away With PeeBee' (Florida no USA 10* - Rico Royal 2):

Changed to an almost fresh Rico Royal 2, my old Plasticover 2 reed died after almost one year of playing! The RR sounds in my ear a bit darker.
