Welcome to the March 2020 tune of the month thread. My first official duty... SOTW Has really hit bottom now

We are venturing into classic pop music. This is a simple and elegant melody which presents a particular set of challenges. No need to be innovative, just try to play it elegantly, with simple and beautiful perfection. The bridge is rather challenging! There are two sections in the tune where there is room for improvisation over the Ab major chord. One short one in the middle and a longer one at the end of the tune. Major Pentatonic scale will get the job done nicely for that improvisation space! Listen to my version to get a little inspiration if you care to.

You can easily purchase a karaoke backing track from Apple Music (iTunes doesn't exist anymore), Google play, or You can grab a quick, free but lower quality backing track off of YouTube.

I am looking forward to seeing what you guys do.

Thanks for preparing LateNiteSax. :)

So finally a POP tune as TOTM, something certain members have requested recently in another thread. Let's see if this will attract some new members who normally don't attend.

Could you also share the sheet music in this thread (that normally brings more people to join)?

Also added this month thread to the main TOTM index:

WHAT??? NOW YOU WANT LEAD SHEETS? This wasn't part of our contract. What sort of bait and switch is this?:mrgreen::mrgreen:
No seriously I don't have the lead sheets down here in Costa Rica, but I found a couple of things on the internets...

Rectangle Music Font Slope Parallel
For Eb instruments. CHANGE THE KEY SIGNATURE TO 3 FLATS (B,E AND Ab) AND JUST READ THE INK.

Font Parallel Number
FOR Bb instruments. CHANGE THE KEY SIGNATURE TO 2 FLATS (Bb+Eb) AND JUST READ THE INK.

hope this helps.

I am excited for this one! I have wanted to learn this song for a while now. One of my all time favorites.

Here is another piece of inspiration. This is Bob Reynolds from his album Déjà Vu with his good friend Juan Rollan also playing tenor.

Ah, you made me feel guilty - so here's a quick version of EBYT on Tenor. I really liked to play only by ear and memory, so this non realbook song is something nice and helpfull!
A bit of noodeling around at the end with no clear plan when to stop .....

Thanks very much. Also very nice! You've got, it's all there.

My one and only suggestion is if possible, just put a bit more air in the sax and support your air column for a super solid feeling. Don't be shy, let it rippppp. ALWAYS play a beautiful melody with a lot of conviction.

For my version, I went with a fairly dark mouthpiece together with a reed on the harder side, a fairly resistant setup on purpose to give me something to blow up against and be able to "sculpt" my sound in a sort of noir and moody fashion. Does that make any sense at all??? LOL

@Taragot - Well done, what you played did fit the style. I also liked your sound, but agree with Larry about the air support and also found the vibrato at some parts a bit too strong for POP (for me using extensive vibrato is more for slower jazz tunes). Good to hear that you are capable of playing different styles very well too, that's something which I'm not that good at.

Thank You LateNiteSax and Peter for your comments on breath support! TOTM is my sax teacher and you gave me something to work on (to try harder reeds f.e.)

Sounds sweet. Great playing as usual. Was not expecting you to be playing pop tunes on sotw but you chose a great tune to do it with.
