A big thank you to Nick (B Flat) for asking me to host this month. I really appreciate every time I get to do this!

I hope you all had a great 2016- I know it wasn’t the best for a lot of people, but we have an incoming new year so let’s get to it!

The TOTM for January 2017 is “Strasbourg St. Denis” by Roy Hargrove. It was originally from the album “Earfood” released in 2008 on Universal Music.

This is a really cool tune, and a bit different than some other TOTMs in that it’s all about the groove! A very basic set of chord changes, and a simple melody that just works. (if you have any questions about the progression just ask and I’ll help the best I can!)

Here are some recordings for you to listen to:

Live version (my favorite):

Studio version:

SWR Big Band (featuring Roy):

Lead sheet (C):

I had to create the Eb and Bb lead sheets on Sibelius. I tried to notate the sax/trumpet duet part the best I could- sorry if it’s tough to read!

Lead sheet (Bb):

Backing track (only one I can find!):

If you would like more information on the place behind the name of the tune, check out the Wikipedia for it-

Even though I’m insanely busy, I’m going to try to stay as active as possible throughout the month. Here’s my first take from the tail end of a late night gig recently. Hope you dig it! https://app.box.com/s/16bml0dqwoiyns302siunp4gmavasazf

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to ask. I hope you have fun with it, and I’m looking forward to listening to all of your takes. Happy New Year!

Great tune. I do have a question ... how do you play the Gm Am7 Bbmaj7 chords, that is, do you just play as if playing over a Gm7 groove, without explicitly 'thinking' about the Am7 and Bbmaj7, just kind of feeling them, ..... or .... what ???

Great question- you can approach it in different ways. If you want to just keep one sound over all 3 chords, you can use concert F minor pentatonic (D minor for alto). Those notes are concert F Ab Bb C Eb (D F G A C for alto). This is a classic sound over those types of chords, and to my ear sounds much better than if you tried to play Bb minor (G minor for you) over it.

If you want to highlight each individual chord, you can do that. A cool thing to do is find a harmonic and rhythmic motif over the first chord and run it over the other 2 as well (just remember to watch those notes, especially when it goes to major!)

I hope this helps! If you have any other questions just fire away!

They opened just fine for me...is anyone else having this problem? I'll try to see what's up!
Still doesn't work for me (don't have issues with downloading other box links, just did it for another forum), but already used some other tricks to get the data :).

For those with the same issue: the backing can also be found on YouTube and can be downloaded using MP3 conversion sites:

That's a great tune for sure.
Not sure I have the goods to do it justice though.(I'm nowhere near cool enough).
But that probably won't stop me from giving it a go.

Ah man, well hopefully you can post something by month's end! Thanks for the compliment- I appreciate it!

Don't worry about not being cool enough for it- most of us aren't (myself included!) but that shouldn't stop us! Hope to hear you soon.

By the way, this might help some people that might be confused by the last chord- concert F7b9. It is simply a V going back to Bb minor. If you're a linear-based played/thinker, you can use the Bb harmonic minor scale (Bb C Db Eb F Gb A) over that, leading back to Bb minor. It's a standard minor resolution sound- give it a try! (feature the Gb (b9) and A (3rd) over the chord to really highlight the dominant aspect of it)

I have a few days free time, a new H2-recorder (in fact, it's a christmas present for my daughter) and like "strasbourg - st.denis" a lot - so I thought I'd join the TOTM-community for the first time.
Hey, this is really big fun! Never recorded something with a backing track, so thank you for the inspiration!
I hope, bassflute as an instrument is ok?

Thanks for posting! It definitely is fun- we're all here for the music. Bass flute is perfectly fine- definitely different, and I'm all about that. Had a cool vibe to the solo- dynamics really stuck out to me, as you can really hear the rawness of the performance and your feeling and expression. It really makes it more personal, not and over-produced over-edited sound. Hope to hear more from you this month!
