Yes, both toons have been TOTM before, but not recently. So why not?
Both are standards that every sax player should be able to play, and play well.
Everybody and their mom has recorded Summertime. Find it on YouTube.
Nearness has a couple of famous recordings, but again, tons of tracks out there.

Backing tracks for Nearness:

Backing tracks for Summertime (in different keys, so lazy folks like me can make the rhythm players change keys while I change saxes and NOT keys!)

Here we are, hours away from 1Dec even here on the Left Coast of the USA. And this is still sadly incomplete.

I should have been home yesterday (where all of the music stuff lives), but no excuses. Instead, choices!

I will post dots and backing track links ASAP, along with me playing the toons myself on a variety of saxes.
My MUSESCORE files for the dots do not want to load, but I will get charts up by Monday latest.
OR feel free to post charts if you have them. I have 'em at home, but not with me.

Here are a couple of SoundCloud files from the archives just to tide youall over.

Thanks for preparing the new thread DSM, much appreciated. :)

Not sure if I like the repeating of songs we did before here on SOTW (Summertime in 2013-12, The Nearness Of You in 2011-08) or other saxophone forums (many of our members are active on other places too), but they are for sure nice songs. I have for instance eight old recordings of these songs in my archive. Let's see how eager our members are in submitting fresh takes, could be nice to hear the changes in ones playing in time.

Added this month thread to the main TOTM index:

Done to death at jams, workshops, lessons etc Killed on its Maiden Voyage. Soo many people have done this very much better than me I've left it alone but just to lend support to the thread I've capitulated here's my effort warts and all, my excuse is a heavy head cold and I'm sticking to it.

Here is what I wrote and posted in the previous 'Summertime' TOTM thread of December 2013:

*********

Just recorded some takes in combination to select a good reed for a Big Band gig coming Tuesday in the open ear. Normally play La Voz medium, but I also tested a Rico Plasticover 2 because it normally should stay in better condition in the cold (expected temperature is a few degrees Celsius above zero). Tested both reeds on two of my mouthpieces, a 1980's Ponzol 120 Super (right channel) and a 1950's Otto Link Florida no USA 9 (left channel). The Ponzol starts the solo sequence in both takes (kind of Summertime Texas Tenor battle!).

- 'Summertime' (Ponzol 120 (Right) - Florida no USA 9 (Left) - La Voz medium):

- 'Summertime' (Ponzol 120 (Right) - Florida no USA 9 (Left) - Rico Plasticover 2):

The differences during playing feel much bigger then what you can hear in the (compressed) MP3 recordings. The Link sounds a bit darker, but not much. The Ponzol plays easier and a bit louder (not much). The cane reed sounds a bit darker then the Plasticover. The Plasticover seems to work a bit better on the high baffle Ponzol, so I think I will play that combi coming Tuesday (but I prefer the La Voz sound on the Link) :).

*********

By the way, I have the same outdoors Big Band gig again next Tuesday, hopefully a bit warmer than the one in 2013. Global warming has it's advantages, but if it goes too far I will probably play the gig under water in about 30 years (as you guys know NL is for a big part below sea level)! Will use my current reed for the next week gig (cane Rico Royal 2).

Finally getting a chance to listen and comment! THANKS for your submissions so far. I am hoping to get something in the can today myself!

First, Mr.PB with two tenor takes of Nearness of You. Oct2018 compared to Aug2011: The older cut is mellower, breathier...the newer one edgier, more altissimo. Both very nice! Liked the mini quote at the end of the 2018 version!

Next up is Ailmont (with an ailment...) recording Nearness of You on alto. I am always struck by how high this sounds on alto (in the original key I mean). I have to confess that when I play this on alto I make the band play in Bb so I can play in G on the alto (the original is in F, so the tenor key is G).

AL, sounds nice n light on the head. Might be better to hold onto that high note (B?) at about 1:24 for a bit longer. Solo was good. Fighting with ideas a little here n there, but sounds great on alto!

Then Al covers Summertime. I like that backing track! Also liking the long note choices on the head. What I mean ... is you hang onto some of the notes (like eeeevvvvvrrrrrrryyyyybody does, which is fine), but cut some of them off! Nice effect!! Seems obvious now that we can hear you doing it.

Solo smooth and comfy. Excellent take!

Keep them coming, folks! Lots of December left, and two - TWO - fine standards to play.

Next, Guido with Nearness of You on the Rampone.

Nice n light. Again with the high note comment. About 1:28 on yours. Hang on just a little longer and you will like the result.

Great transition to the solo section! Lots of good work in there.

Here are some charts for Nearness of You. Concert, Bb, Eb. Summertime coming also.
The astute observer will have noticed the the Summertime backing tracks are offered in several keys.
As mentioned earlier, on some songs I like to make the band switch keys when I change horns so I can play in the same key on either sax. I like to do that with BOTH Nearness and Summertime. Not to encourage that sort of thing, but ...

I know I am just a bloody beginner but a few weeks ago I slapped this together - it was the last Sunday morning before fall hit and mostly meant to do a little play on Bb horn flavors

Andrew White Freia 1023
Juan Orozco Artesano Model 20
B&S 2001 - Phil Barone Hollywood MPC Tenor
Martin Handcraft - Morgan Vintage Sop
Conn Bass - Berg Larsen Bari 110/0 MPC

A friend of mine was supposed to do the vocals but she had to leave town ...

Nice TOTM picks. Summertime being the mother of all standards. And The Nearness of You as one of the very beautiful ballads. And very enjoyable renditions made already.
Although I have not found time to make a new recording yet I remembered I did some on The Nearness about three years ago.

I really enjoyed this, very relaxed and a pleasure like how you let the Lady's voice stand out. Thank you.

Very nice. I wish I could make my 10M sing like that. Your sound is what I'm working toward. Thanks for the music.
