Thanks to Dave Wright for hosting/choosing last months TOTM.
He has asked me to choose the tune for December 2016.

While a Christmas tune may have been more appropriate, I struggle to find one that I could listen to more than once.
So for Decembers TOTM I have chosen:

Mean To Me.
With music by Fred E. Ahlert and lyrics by Roy Turk, 1929.

Most would be familiar with this tune or at least heard of it before.
There are some great inspirational versions on YouTube as well as some backing tracks.
Below is a link to Bb and Eb sheets and a Backing I found on YouTube.

Looking forward to hearing all of your takes on this one.

Lester Young
Sarah Vaughan
Billie Holiday

LOL! Definitely an appropriate tune for all the SOTW trolls.....but we'll be lucky to hear any of them even do a take with just the melody.

I was looking for a contrafact to Mean To Me but couldn't find one ..... out of curiosity, can anybody think of another tune that was written on these changes?

We played this song with the combo I played in a long time ago (Bob Session). I have a live recording from 1999 in De Meerse in Hoofddorp, NL. Sound quality is not very good (recorded with a small digital device), but I share it anyhow! Melody is played by baritone and tenor (me), first solo is on alto at 1:05, (my) tenor solo is at 2:08 and the (guest) clarinet takes the last solo at 3:08.

I played in that time less aggressive then now and used in those times a metal 1970's Otto Link Early Babbitt 8* and La Voz medium reed. Already had the 1953 Selmer SBA tenor I still use, but with lower key heights then now (sounding more mellow then).

Hope to record a new and fresh version later this month :).

David, you could be the first to write an alternative tune on the changes !

It's indeed not 'Moose The Mooche', even while the piano plays it as intro in this 'Mean To Me' version of Dizzy and Sonny Stitt:

And here is a Lockjaw version:

And one of Illinois Jacquet:

Let us take a moment to pray for all the members who cant play all those unnecessary annoying notes. And if they know what music is, it's because of you. LoL..
Now I need to re-edit my ignore list.

And right on cue out comes a troll .... it's like magic! :faceinpalm:

Anyway, back to the thread ..... I'm really glad B Flat picked this tune because I'm not really as familiar with it as I should be. There are some fun harmonic twists in the changes to this tune .... hope to get some time to dig into them a little deeper. Here's a quick first take for the month ....

Just sounding great man. Beautiful way to weave in and out of the changes, and you know I love that sound!
