So Cleger asked me to pick this months selection.. I wanted to pick something that was in the more bluesy/soul jazz era of things... something some of you could really get down and dirty with..or swing hard.. your choice or both!!

So my choice is Sugar by Stanley Turrentine.
Chart is available in NR Book 3.
Aebersold playalongs vol 49 and 70 and Hal Leonard Vol 35.

Here's the original..

Greg Vail blows pretty hard on it here..

so if you pick the tune.. you don't have to play it right? j/k

Nice pick Dean :). I have played that tune with the old combo I played in years ago. Just found an old recording of around 1998 of it as played during a rehearsal. It has solo's on tenor (played by me, starting around 1:08), baritone, vibes and guitar. Here is the link:

- Sugar (Bob Session rehearsal, recorded around 1998): http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=10899891

I would like to do a new take, but don't have a backing track available.

I still haven't posted a clip in any of these threads--I should stop wimping out... :-(

I do like this tune, though. My teacher recorded a smokin' solo on a big band version a few years ago that I've been meaning to transcribe. This is probably as good an excuse as any to get started...

Sounds like a great idea Leanne :). Would really like to hear that beautiful SBA tenor of you, so why not try a double recording on tenor and bari :bluewink:.

I can send anybody who needs this backing track a copy. B

Another awesome call for the TOTM selection...one of those songs everyone should know, looking forward to everyone getting in touch with their "inner groove!" A few interesting harmonic wrinkles to this tune as well....

Nice live version in that YT link, the guitar player was really in-sync with the drummer on that...they kicked it in gear towards the end of his solo there...

Peter: Enjoyed the old rehearsal track, nice tone on the older mouthpiece. Your playing was nice and in the pocket, and melodic. Would have enjoyed more, that was kind of a short bit of space to play in....

Let's get ready for some B3!

I dig this version:

So sad I've never seen him live in concert. Just love that sound, that groove.
Nice tune for this month. I also like Sanborn's version.
So, let's see.

Here's the one my teacher recorded (it's just part of the track, and he's the tenor player at around :30). I wish I could play with even half that attitude...

Wow, that's a great solo. Sounds like a metal Berg to me (120/1?). I would go for my own solo if you want to post, this one seems hard to transcribe and play [rolleyes]!
