Thanks to Dave P. for passing me the torch for this month. Dave did an exceptional job hosting July and I will do my best to keep things rolling. This month's tune is "Invitation" by Bronislau Kaper. I love this tune because of it's beautiful melody and sophisticated harmony. "Invitation" has also been recorded by many of my favorite saxophone players: Getz, Coltrane, Stitt, Joe Henderson, Brecker, Bob Berg, Dexter, etc.

Good luck to everybody this month.....this tune isn't easy! I am hoping to put up a recording soon and then work thoughout the month to try to get another, hopefully improved, take. Speaking of recording, I have some lead sheets and play-alongs that should come in handy.

Thanks again to Dave for choosing me to host, and can't wait to hear everybody's recordings!

Great tune, way over my head as most tunes that I like are. I always thought of this as a Joe Henderson tune since I have several versions from him in my collection.

Good for you Nick for kicking off the festivities. Sounded a bit tentative throughout, but that will get better with some more time spent on it.

Great Pick! Would have been my choice if I were to choose the TOTM.
I've never played it, but I'm actually studying it at the moment for a gig. If I get any good at it, I might try to record an alto version.

B Flat - Thanks for being first to step up! Like I said, this tune isn't easy. Not only is the key center constantly moving, but there are some altered dominant chords that really need to be dealt with accurately....can't fake it on this one!

Take some time with this one and REALLY get the arpeggios under your fingers and in your ears. There are some time issues here, but I imagine that it's partly a product of just trying to find strong notes....knowing the arpeggios really well should help you lock in more rhythmically. On a simpler note, make sure that you really tune up with the play along....you're quite a bit flat on this one.

Good luck this month!

Here's my first take this month....I'm using the Bergonzi play along for my backing track. The rhythm section is SO SMOKING on these play-alongs!

Hoping to spend some quality time getting "next level" with the chord changes, especially the altered V7 chords....and as always, trying to get stronger in the time department.

Thanks Dave!

I LOVE me some Bob Berg! One of my all-time favorite musical experiences was getting TORCHED by Bob in college. A tenor battle on Moment's Notice, and he was out for blood. Probably didn't help that I was playing Bob Berg licks during a tenor battle with Bob Berg....rookie move:) I think I irritated him just enough to give him a reason to destroy me. It was EPIC!!!! He's probably in my Top 3 of influences on tenor.....wish he was still around to show us ALL how it's done.

Play along are a drag! Seems like the most happening ones are always too short and the lame ones go on for ever....you can't win!

Really nice David. It does not sound like you were using the Mosaic on this recording, what was the piece? Great energy and swing throughout, definitely a few more choruses were in order!
