Hey everyone,

Roger was kind enough to ask me to pick the tune for this month's TOTM! "You Stepped Out of a Dream" has been one of my favourite tunes for a while now and the melody is easy to learn and the changes are really fun to blow on.

Here are some notable saxophone recordings:

Sonny: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sulvJs-HiQQ

Stan Getz: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBY3WI7DyV4

Lee Konitz/Warne Marsh: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kY5eZ2izSQ0

This tune is also on one of Dick Oatts' Standards records, which is one of my favourite versions of the tune (check it out if you can, can't find it on youtube).

Here's a play-along on Youtube, I'm sure there are many others out there as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qc41gzqKCc

Looking forward to hearing some takes on this!

Brandon

McFlurry: Here's a contrafact of "You Stepped Out of a Dream" called
"Chick's Tune" written by Chick Corea for a Blue Mitchell recording called "The Thing to Do" that I had previously posted.
Same solo changes but slightly different than the head. It's a fun tune to play.

Of course, my favorite is Sonny Rollins' version. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sulvJs-HiQQ
Never heard that contrafact before, sounds cool with some nice harmonies you put in there!

I can't take credit for the harmony. It's Chick's harmony off the recording. Great arrangement as is most of Chick's stuff. Thanks for listening.

Brendan: Good sound & intonation. At 3:22 you started to really get into it. Knowing the words helps a lot when playing a tune like this. Straight ahead!

nice outlining of the changes
Thanks Brandon .. if I didn't stick to the chords I wouldn't be able to play anything, as I have no musical imagination.

Thanks George ... I have a Glen Miller version of this with vocals. I probably should have listened to it more than once before I hit record !!
Oh well, my take is posted ... so now I can relax for the rest of the month without that Peebee pressure !! :bluewink:

Glad you posted that fast Brendan, and sounding good!

I won't have much time for recording coming weeks, if at all this month :(.
