Looking forward to the call. I have work this Saturday, but will try to be online. When you post the time, would add what time zone? That may be why I missed last week.

Where are you at? I always post both Pacific and Eastern Standard. This week would be 10am Pacific/1pm Est. Obviously if you are somewhere in between can’t be that far off. I should post the call Friday when I scheduling for zoom so.

Good chat today, Everyone! I think we had eight different people on the call. A few things we discussed: approaches and mindset while playing patterns/ moving things around on the horn/ through keys, different ways to go about playing in groups and going beyond just being the soloist and how to approach adding more to the group dynamic in supportive/ not feature roles, always a little bit of gear talk and today we touched a little on playing with effects, wind controllers, and mouthpieces we‘ve had refaced. Something for everyone and always good conversation.

Fantastic. This is growing the way I hoped it might. Many of us remember crowded practice rooms where you heard others working out stuff. Then you talk to others about music or social stuff. I wish I could have joined. I’m subscribed to bob renolds and Eric marienthal s site. So it’s interesting to compare what they each have to offer vrs private teaching or you tube searches. I’m becoming more and more appreciative of having a teacher with a clear idea of where I’m going musically and the ways I jump into a swamp and swim in circles without his guidance. I basically said to bob rather than I assess myself why don’t you listen to my recording on. My website and tell me next steps. It’s like you coming to me wanting stronger arms for a better baseball swing. And my response is calf exercises because Everyone will benefit from that ??? I like Eric’s site because I like to watch how he coaches students and what he says to me personally based on hearing me play. What I got from bobs site is the idea that you need more patience and greater depth in whatever you play to get better. I agree but I thing bobs stuff is generic bebop training and Eric understands what I’m trying to do musically.
I do like bobs advice on transcribing and that’s the biggest thing I want to add to my playing. When I’m doubttranscribe something. Then in hadar s flute with it’s all about time and swinging lines. Time is more important than note choice. So now you guys owe
Me. 400 clams for all this lesson rehash. It’s all good. My sister is coming back strong. K

Keith, You would’ve enjoyed the chat today. It’s cool that there’s a variety of teaching styles/ approaches so all types can find what works best. I enjoyed the short time I worked with Eric.

Glad to hear your sister is once again responsive and improving. See you next time.

If you wouldn’t mind posting that link to your recording on this thread or in a private message to some of us, that would be great.

I like it! Great band vibe and your lines are good. My only suggestion would be to do a different line one of the times it happens…like when it comes back after the bridge/ slow section, then at the end you go back to line 1 to round it out and bring it home. I also feel a second line that echoes/ responds to the vocal in the second half of the last verse would add a lot to the overall song…and on the end vamp I’d love to hear some sax and piano wailing, especially live; kind of like an E Street Band ending with everyone cutting loose. Well done!

I already told you yesterday that I think it sounds great!
And there are always ways how to make things different but sometimes keeping it simple also works just fine.

On the topic of the sax being an integral part throughout the entire song, Derik Dyer is my favorite sax player of all those who toured with Joe Cocker, he plays essentially throughout the whole song but everything he does leads up to the solo. Very different from Norbert Frimmel who often just played his solo and did background percussion for the rest of the song. Both are great but I prefer the dynamic of Derik Dyer

I do like simple things. Like Johnny Cash replied to Buddy Hollie when asked about playing fast songs, “we would if we could “ 😂

Great suggestions and thank you all for the kind words.

I really like the idea of opening up on the last chorus. I think that would add a lot to climax of the tune.
