This month B&I TOTM host jmoen3 is currently on a short holiday and asked me to start the thread for him. Here is the text he prepared:

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

I really wanted to come and pick this wonderful tune for everyone but I'm off on my anniversary in a cruise to the Caribbean, So thank you to Peter for filling this in for me!

Without further ado, I have chosen for this month's TOTM....... Out of Nowhere!

This fantastic jazz standard should be a great piece for us, and has so many wonderful takes. Here's Charlie Parker, Stan Getz, and Phil Woods to start things off:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgkGr1qA9Bg

And here is a great version and backing track:

Out Of Nowhere Bb

Out Of Nowhere Eb

Out of Nowhere Backing Track

Now we are off! I wish I could make that Stan Getz Intro happen on my version, but I'll just have to stick to the regular tune and changes lol.

Good luck everyone I hope you enjoy. I'll return on the 10th and be ready and raring to play this piece!

Thanks Peter. I am currently in Miami waiting to board my ship and head out. No sax time for me. I hope everyone enjoys this great song!

Geez...life is rough !

So - contrafact time :

"Somewhere" by Jim Snidero

It's two choruses of an etude based on the Out of Nowhere changes, then some useless noodling afterwards and a merciful fade out.

You sound definitely 'somewhere' - it's a lovely take and your so called 'noodling' is a nicely constructed solo that has you following the guide tones in a very melodic fashion. As for "contrafacts" - aren't they just "alternative facts"? (no political pun intended )

They're "fake takes" ... (no political implications)

I'm suffering from "the wife is constantly around the house" syndrome, and can't get in any practice time, so I took the easy way out and just read through the exercise.
Played it through once, then hit record. (Though I have played it before.)

Here's an somewhat laid back version I recorded on tenor about a year ago using a backing track from:
"Tradin’ With The Greats" – from Jody Jazz. I used an old ribbon mic in an attempt to achieve a "vintage" sound.

That link didn't work Gary - I hunted through your uploads and found this one from 2016 :

Is that the one ? It sounds great ! (it looks like I commented on the awesome laid back-ness at the the time  )

I'm a Star Trek fan- this tune has the same changes as the theme from the original Star Trek series. Needless to say, great pick!

OK, link is fixed! Sorry for my lack of computer skills. And yes, it is the same one. Hard to believe that it was 2 -3 years ago - I'll try to do another take with a different backing track if time permits this month.

I just realized that B & I is beginner and intermediate - sorry I didn't notice that! I just noticed the tune, and was all excited! :)
No problem Dave, actually this thread is (like the main TOTM) open for all who want to join (and the level of the picked songs in both threads is often about the same anyhow).

Killer version, would have loved to hear the solo lasting a bit longer! Thanks for sharing. :)

+1 !

Also loved the edgy tone and seemingly unending supply of ideas during the solo.
