Greetings Fellow Sopraninoids!
I just borrowed a p. mauriat sopranino and am hearing a lot of what seems to be saliva/mouthpiece distortion. Is this a common issue? I'm using the mouthpiece that came with it and a marca 3 reed. I can't imagine it is the horn, but it is almost impossible to play this thus far with a clean sound. Is it the reed/mouthpiece? or could it possibly be the horn itself?
Any inclinations!
Best wishes,
A

Most often this comes from the tip being too closed or the area immediately behind the tip being too high. The saliva becomes a bit "trapped" there and does not clear into the horn. It only takes a small constriction there to cause that problem.

I have a similar sopranino (this model is made in Taiwan for different factories by one factory alone) and I have, I think, the same mouthpiece (the one that comes with the horn) and I have the same. This happens if I hold the horn down , if I hold it up in front of me, (as one should) it doesn't happen.
I also have a Yanagisawa metal mouthpiece 7 and it doesn't happen with that mouthpiece, so, Joe Giardullo analysis fits. Incidentally I prefer the sound of the ebonite Taiwanese mouthpiece.

I am curious to know how you like the Yanagisawa sopranino mouthpiece. I am less than thrilled by it bu perhaps that has also to do with all sorts of other problems in playing the sopranino for me which is somehow spoiling the experience.

I play on a Yani HR 5 (with a Rovner lig) on a Chinese made nino and it has a lovely sound - very mellow, not bright at all - and handles the whole range very easily. But it is definately worth getting in touch with Joe at Soprano Planet - he makes the most amazing pieces (for nino too). I notice he has a reworked Yani nino piece in stock now.

I use either a Yani HR 5 or metal 7 on my Yani nino. Both play fine. No problems. I'm curious about the Mauriat nino. Aside from the mpc. issue how does it play? Response throughout the range, ergos, etc. The Yani is a solid little horn but I'd like more modern keywork.

I use a Yani HR that was modified by Joe on my Yani nino. Works very well (can be heard in posts in this section of the forum). I also have an older Selmer HR mouthpiece that's not quite as good, but also excellent. Have been trying to get hold of a friend who has got a Mauriat nino but haven't connected yet. Would be interested to hear what people think about it.

Yes the mechanism is very nice and easy. There is an adjustable thumb, which is useful as i have long arms. I have recently tried out the new solid silver yani, the normal yani, a couple selmer mark IV's, and the howarth in house brand. The solid silver was rather interesting, but I find the yani's have a muted color below low Eb. The selmers were amazing sounding, but the ones i tried had an exaggerated angle between the left and right hand -not sure if that was an alteration or by design . So far the mauriat plays well and has an even color through the entire horn. I will tell you what I think after I get that altered yani mouthpiece from soprano planet.
