I heard John Coltrane was a huge Sonny Stitt fan, and when it comes to bop sax, most I know would put Stitt in their top 5.

Heard a few things, but I haven't been sold on Sonny Stitt yet...

Are there some Stitt fans out there who would like to point the way to what you think is his best work? I'd love to check it out.

Personal Appearance and The Modern Jazz Sextet (with Gillespie and the MJQ) changed my playing for the better. Also Live at the Hi Hat (Vol. 2 I think) and the Rollins/Stitt/Gillespie Eternal Triangle recording (on Verve - not sure of the actual title) are both keepers as well. Stitt did so many recordings that every person on SOTW could come up with their top 5 without repeating a title.

That would be Sonny Side Up. It's very good. I myself prefer the Live at the Hi-Hat, Vol. 1; Sits in w/the Oscar Peterson Trio and the 1950s Prestige date with Bud Powell & J. J. Johnson.

I love Tune Up from 1972 also I have a chess album simply titled Sonny Stitt it contains a blues entitled Jack Spratt which is killer.

I love Stitt's tenor sound in his last recordings. Sonny's Back comes to mind just for the quality of his sound.

Gene Ammons & Sonny Stitt - Boss Tenors: Straight Ahead from Chicago, 1961

Stitt does stellar work on both tenor and alto on this date. It's really cool to hear the contrast between the two players - Ammons is all bombast and in-your-face, ballsy tenor fire while Stitt is agile and almost whimsical at times on both horns. One of the great "tenor battle" recordings, up there with Rollins & Trane, Al & Zoot, etc.

Here is a nice live recording of him from the early 50's playing 'Indiana'.

I categorize this a ridiculous. I've got a recording of him and Dexter on Lady be good I'll try to post it, if anyone is interested.
Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt straight ahead is a great album too.

hgiles read my mind! Sonny Stitt sits in with the Oscar Peterson Trio. Au Privave? Oh man. I have the original vinyl but I dubbed it onto my iTunes so I wouldn't wear it out... freakin' Oscar is fabulous. Click on that Amazon link and scroll down to the samples... hot licks!
