IMO, you can play any tune on any instrument and if you play it well, it will sound good. Which is of course at odds with everyone else here, I guess! ;) Here's an example, Pink Panther is most associated with tenor sax (and of course it was scored for tenor soloist by Hank Mancini) but check out the soprano sax rendition on Dave Koz At the Movies - it sounds brilliant.

Many of you posted jazz songs. Lets not forget some pop and R&B. Songs like: When a Man Loves a Woman, Careless Whispers, Every Breath You Take, Againist All Odds(Take a Look at Me Now), and Here and Now. Those will get you out of the old time typical jazz/ classical player blues. Of course I play several jazz songs but I don't like to stick to that(It just gets boring to me). My main axe out of my alto tenor and the good ole Soprano is the Soprano. The size and sound make it perfect to go anywhere and play. The songs listed above sound great on the soprano.

I agree with all the Bechet inspired choices of course. It's interesting how one is influenced on a question like this by the recordings of the masters. I was trying to think of some standards that I didn't associate with bechet, coltrane et al and I came up with Yesterdays/My Funny Valentine - I like minor stuff on soprano. I do also tend to feel like pop/rock stuff reworked in a "jazzy setting" tends to work well on soprano. I also prefer the soprano to alto (just) and tenor (definitely) as a "classical" instrument, playing the rep of other instruments (as someone mentioned below).

I recently got a sop and found it worked beautifully with Angela by Bob James - it's the wonderful theme from the TV comedy Taxi. The opening theme goes up to high F on the sop and the keyboard part uses much of it's 1st and 2nd octave to good effect.

I heard Gentle Rain by Luiz Bonfa played on flute years ago and it fits sop too.

In fact, any song that you could hear a flute or trumpet playing should also fit.
