Howdy,

My son recently bought an Akai EWI and is enjoying this new instrument and its potential for new colors in expression. One particular sound that he is interested in acquiring is any midi sound file that will emulate Pat Metheny's Roland GR300 guitar synthesizer (a sound that is featured in many of Pat Metheny's recordings, including "Are You Going With Me?" and "Song For Bilbao").

So, does anyone know how to get/buy/acquire such a midi file? Any successes or tips on modifications of other existing midi files to emulate this sound?

I bet you'd get some answers on Guitar forums.

But I don't think its so much a MIDI file you want as a way to emulate the actual sound. MIDIFILE contains primarily (for most people) note information (ie melody), and to some extent the controller info maybe such as expression, aftertouch and breath, but the actual timbre relies on a specific sound module, so more relevant might be to get a Roland GR300 or emulation plugin for a DAW.

It kinda depends on what EWI your son has. If it's the USB version, that plugs into a computer, or has a MIDI output, the easiest way to get this sound is to use virtual instruments in a DAW. A guitar sound with plugins like an amp simulator, chorus, flanger etc. will get pretty close.

I also suggest looking a Patchman Music, https://www.patchmanmusic.com/WindControllerBanks.html. They make sound banks for EWI, as well as Yamaha wind controllers. They might have some suggestions too, and they run a forum specific to wind controllers.

As Pete said, what you're looking for is a DAW plugin (probably a VST instrument), rather than a midi file, that can emulate the GR300.

Arturia sells an analog synth emulator (the ARP 2600 VST) that apparently includes a "metheny" patch/preset. I haven't used it, but it's what's being used in the video below. Sounds pretty convincing to me.

@floobydust, you really need to clarify which AKAI model your son has. There are huge differences between the EWI 4000 and 5000.....the internal synths on those models are completely and utterly different. If he has the 5000, this is a very limited device in that you can only edit the internal patches i.e. you can't load any new sounds at all. If he has the 4000, I'd highly recommend that your son purchases the EWI 4000 soundbank from Patchman Music (as @skeller47 has mentioned above). There's also a fantastic soundbank by Gino Chimenti here: https://www.suonopuro.net/ewipreen.html?i6s2. Finally, VG Trumpet (https://vgtrumpet.com/product/new-internal-ewi4000s-patches/) has an EWI soundbank for the 4000 but I bought some of their other products and they're a bit "meh". However, their EWI bank does sound pretty good on the demo and after just listening to the demo again, there are some very "Metheny-like" patches. Plus, this soundbank is very cheap at just $29.

Alternately, your son could look at using his EWI (4000 or 5000) as a controller with an external sound source (e.g. hardware synth, computer, iPad etc) but then you're looking at considerably more $$ and a more complicated setup.

But first of all, can you clarify which model EWI your son has?

Hello, my son bought a Akai EWI 5000 (even bought a stand and case for it). Thanks to everyone for suggestions.
