Sorry Pete, that was back on Dec. 1. I can't remember that far back, but it was something with playing with loops...maybe you were talking about playing with a DJ?
Ah yes, I was playing with a DJ. I was going to get into using loop pedals etc, but sadly life has been too fast and busy.

I still intend to do that.

Rory the effects that would do that are what used to be called octave dividers. I have an album of Cannonball Addeeley using one (Accent on Africa) but those older ones tended to sound a bit bassy. An octave divider would give you octaves, a more versatile harmoniser gives you other intervals.

That's interesting. What's the story with the in-office concert?
I do not know that much in fact - it seems to be some kind of collaboration between Norway's music information center and national broadcasting company. They have quite a lot of concerts that can be found from vimeo.com.

I really like the way how Kornstad employs extended techniques in solo performance.

And for rleitch: one option to be considered to get those low notes is Digitech Whammy, which is one kind of harmoniser. If someone has tried out different harmonisers, it would be interesting to know, which are especially good for saxophones.

I was in Bath this weekend, walking round I heard the unmistakable tones of a fairly edgy sax so went to have a look. Originally I thought it was a full band, or a guy playing with a backing track but I watched him and he explained how he did it all with loops and effects. He was playing with a couple of rap artists, not usually my scene, but there's no denying good music even if it's not your scene.

After I found this track, amazing stuff, really good soloist. tbh I'd love to know how this is structured, I mean, it's not like a standard blues progression is it, how do you play when you don't have like I IV V etc to go against? I guess there's a whole new world for me to discover here.

The electric bass player Victor Wooten does this on bass. He sets up a perccussive loop, adds some funky slap bass, and then improvises over that, cutting loops in and out as he plays.

He did it when he visited our school. I sang him the school's Alma Mater just before the show, and he incorporated it into the improvisations. He's a MONSTER...
