I'm one of two saxes in a band. The other's playing alto and bari, and I'll hopefully get access to a tenor to double up with along with my alto. How do I decide between the two? I'm sure it's mostly intuition, but what are some cues I should be on tenor for one song and alto for the other?

It's more to do with what range you need to play your 'part'. Some ranges of the two saxes will just sound better on some tunes than others.

also consider adding sop to your arsonal so you can cover the trumpet parts .

When he plays Alto you play Tenor? That is the thing I can think of. You really don't need two Alto's on a part unless you want to harmonize.
