Beginner here, working on the long tones and improving my sound. I imagine the longer time players already know about this, but thought I'd share this exercise I came across on youtube since it's been helping improve my tone a lot. The video is about putting a pencil under the octave key to prop it up, and then working on the lower register going down in 1/2 tones from the low A (not the high A).

It takes a LOT of air, and was hard to even get the note to sound at first. But boy has it helped me with my tone and to open up my throat and the long tones. I guess it came from Sonny Rollins originally. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4VaFxOsI7w
