I currently play a Yamaha 62II Alto, which I love. However, the G2 neck isn't cutting, it has a dent in it and also (due to tuning and intonation problems associated with it). I'm looking at getting a new neck. The V1 neck seems to be the best option. I am debating between the Silver Plated Neck ($319.00) and the Sterling (solid) Silver Neck ($589.00). Yamaha states that "Sterling (solid) silver necks will liven up any player's sound by providing a wider dynamic range and increased flexibility." Does the Solid Silver neck warrant the price? You can buy a new horn for that (not a nice one). Should I buy the Silver Plated Neck now or hold off and save for the Sterling Silver Neck. (Also willing to take new neck suggestions.) (Jazz player by the way)

I just bought a new neck for my YAS-62II and it's playing more in tune, but for what it's worth a lot of my intonation problems were on my end and I've been working on that as well. Anyway, here's a link to where I got it. The seller was really good to work with and guaranteed that I could return it if it didn't play well. I did get the last silver neck but they had the same neck in gold lacquer. Or you could see if they can get another silver one for you.

On alto I doubt if you notice a difference that would justify the cost. The same on baritone, except more so. These necks are small and only have one bend. The tenor neck is where you get the big difference. The (modern) baritone neck is smaller than the alto and compared to the horn is really tiny. I have tried several Sterling necks on alto and one on baritone and they just didn't do anything special - except one alto neck that seemed to be more like the original neck (Selmer USA) but in Sterling. I ended up using this one because it solved some problems I was having with the horn. The original neck was damaged and I was having trouble finding one that worked and just took a chance on the Chinese one. So in general if you try a silver neck it should be by the horn manufacturer which is your best shot at getting something that will work for you. I doubt that a silver-plated brass neck would make any difference on an alto, plus it would look kind of funny. the Sterling necks all have brass hardware so they can fit visually with the sax. Of course when Brecker came out with the silver plated neck on his tenor, nobody cared what it looked like - they all rushed out to buy one.

The marketing is what it is. That being said I tried about 6 or 7 new Yamaha tenor necks a couple years back and the one I liked the best was the solid silver V1. At the time I didn't know it was solid silver. In addition I tried a lacquered V1 as well as C1, E1, and G1 necks in various finishes and I picked the solid silver V1 out of the bunch thinking it was just silver plated. I also have a silver plated neck for my Tenor Madness Custom that I like though I'm not sure how much difference there is between the unlacquered neck that came with the horn.

Nah, just get the finish you like. The difference isn’t that big.

Regardless of what you believe about materials or plating or whatever, the difference just isn’t that much.

I haven't tried a silver plated V1, but when I got my custom EX alto last year a friend loaned me gold plated and sterling silver V1's to try and while both were good, I found the sterling silver gave me a fair bit more depth, resonance and power. I bought one and I've been extremely happy with it.

I had the original G1 neck, black lacquer, that came with my 82z tenor. I got the sterling silver V1, and found it a great improvement in almost every respect.

Was it due to the difference in neck type or the material, or both? Hard for me to say.

But the silver neck and black body do look quite nice together. (FWIW, the V1 is fairly universally considered a better neck than the G1)

Would I ever go back to using the G1? Never. But not due to the look.
