Very nice sound! I prefer the Z actually, which surprised me. Wonderful sound and sublime playing on both though, and couldn't even begin to name that tune 🙂

Very nice technique and tone, the personality of your tone is consistent across both horns. But I like the Series III a little bit more, there is a slight "singing" liveliness and fullness to the tone that I don't hear in the Yamaha. I know you kept all things equal with the mouthpiece/reed but I would swear you added a little 'verb when recording the Series III- but you didn't.

Both sounded nice, I just like the Series III a little bit more.

Nice playing. Very similar horns indeed. The S-III seems a tad more lively, but almost as if it was just inspiring you to blow more, to let loose.

What would be nice is the same side by side playing, but over a lush ballad in the low register....

To me, the Series III is a little broader, less focused. Not by much though and not in a bad way.

OK, the tune sound's like Nica's Dream. As far as the horns go, I really can't tell any difference.
I'm a Z player, so I am biased, but you sound great on both. I prefer the Z overall. Somehow it just sounds more focused, which is somewhat counterintuitive. Best of luck in your quest.
Nice playing! Can't tell much difference on my end at all...what are your thoughts from behind the horns?
Thanks for the thoughts/comments everyone! They sound very similar indeed. I do have a preference, but I'll hold onto that for the moment. Hoping to make a couple more videos that might highlight some of the differences better.

Funny you mentioned that. There is a little bit of Reverb added (~25% medium room), but it was the same on both of them. I've owned the Series III about 6 months, and the Z only about 2 weeks, so that could contribute.

This is probably the best match up I could ask to hear. I owned an 82z once and have considered getting a series III many times. I prefer the III after this. They are very close. Thanks for posting!
Glad you appreciate it! I'm lucky to have three great tenors at the moment, and didn't see many direct comparisons despite these being two of the best modern horns out there.

Here's the same etude: Custom Z vs Mark VI. To be fair, I've been playing this Mark VI almost a decade.

Yet again, preferring the Z. You sound more comfortable and fluid on the MkVI, but the sound of the Z is just more full, with more core to the sound and seems better to me! Would love to hear it in person, as I'm sure you have your own preferences!

Here's an etude from a book I've been working out of lately, playing the Z and Series III back to back. Using the same mouthpiece/reed combo. Thoughts?
I prefer the buzz that I hear in the SIII.

Is it just the tuning, or does the Z have a better intonation, specially in the upper range, around the upper C (concert Bb) ?

... I thought your work on the Custom Z was more lyrical. Your playing on the Selmer was more sonorous.

I prefer the mk 6 the Z is brighter i think and a slight preference for the SA series 111. Very nice melodic playing thanks .
Appreciate the thoughts everyone!

From what I can tell, the intonation on all of them is pretty solid, but there's small differences. I've been switching around so much on them that I'm not entirely comfortable with any of them.

But, you make a good point, I've only had the Z for a few weeks, and it feels comfortable. I basically make the same changes as I would normally make, and it seems pretty close.
